I seem to have fallen into a bit of a reading rut. I'm reading books that I am not particularly enjoying. I keep on starting books and then not finishing them.
1. Deafening by Frances Itani- The story of a deaf Canadian woman and her lover and their experiences of World War 1. I found the war stuff boring, but thought the details about deafness were fascinating.
2. A sport and a pastime by James Salter- Basically, a dude goes to France and follows his friend around. The friend wanders around and has a lot of sex with a woman. That's it. Meh. (The details about France were nice)
3. The dog by the cradle, the serpent beneath by Erika Ritter- There were some really good things about this book and some definite bad things. I didn't like the literary references, but I adored the scientific and journalistic pieces. This book examined our uneasy relationship with animals. I found some parts disturbing, but I think that was the nature of the book.
4. Away by Jane Urquhart- This is one of my mom's favourite books. I loved the beginning section of it. The first section takes place in Ireland, and is about a woman who is possessed by a lover from the sea. The second part takes place in Canada. I didn't enjoy this section as much, but felt that the writing in the book was lush, green and gorgeous.
5. Don't cry by Mary Gaitskill- Gaitskill is a better writer in the short story form. Unfortunately, I think my love affair with her is over. There were some decent short stories in this book, but nothing really wowed me.
