On STD's... Since so many people in the USA have gone ultra-conservative...you can't even talk about STD's even with your Doctor without being labelled a prostitute or a druggie! After visiting Amish Country and seeing what looked like an Amish youth on his year OUTSIDE the Amish community with what looked a bit like Aids sores on him.... People ( Read more... )

SimJust speaking as a Registered Nurse, you can't get most STIs (sexually transmitted infections) from a toilet seat. The bacteria/viruses can't live outside the body for long and even if they could they don't have the means to break through the skin barrier. I also don't know what you mean by "aids sores". It takes a while for prople with hiv to progress to aids so the liklihood that you are seeing advanced bacterial or yeast infections on a teenager's body because their Tcell count has gotten so low that they can't fight off everyday "germs" is more than just a bit of a stretch. There are plenty of more common reasons why people would have sores or welts on their body like excema or psoriasis or an allergic reaction. If they are around the mouth its a good chance that it could be herpes/cold sores. I agree that we should talk more open and honestly abut health and STIs so that everyone can have access to the information instead of relying on old wives tales and what people saw on the internet.

Thanks for taking the time to read.

First, it may not have been AIDS all over the Amish Teenager, but it looked like it. You probably already know this, but the Amish live with 1850's cart and buggy technology as a religious practice. A lot of religious communities in the USA are less strict about technology but VERY reticent to talk about this stuff.

Second, I did not rely on something off the internet or 'old wives tales' regarding toilet seat transmission of STD's. That's straight from an MD's diagnoses. Granted it is unusual, and likely involves someone accidentally sitting on a wet toilet seat. Not something very many people are likely to do in a public restroom. This is more likely in a home situation with several people sharing the toilet and shower.
