We just had a fire.
I left the burner on all day after making tea this morning, and when we got back from Costco Dustin put a box of groceries on it. He was outside getting more groceries (and chatting with the maintenance guy who was saying that we're great tenants who never cause problems, ha ha) and I was in the bedroom putting away laundry when the smoke alarm went off. The box wasn't just smoldering or anything, it and the stuff inside it was up in flames. Big ones. At first I froze up and then just screamed out the door for Dustin, but then I grabbed the box and tossed it in the bathtub and turned the shower on it, after first dropping it on the kitchen and then bathroom floor because it was falling apart from being on fire. I wish I had known that the maintenance guy was running up the stairs with a fire extinguisher, because my efforts lead to burns in the kitchen, hallway and bathroom floors. And then I had to clean out a bathtub full of ashes, chicken and salad. Super gross. It also melted two of the oven knobs. We're fine, and we have renter's insurance, but I still feel like the biggest heel ever.
