"Alright," Hikari said, serious. "It's now or never. I can't keep running away from this forever." She sighed deeply. How many times had she been over this? How many times had she said that today would be different, that she'd have a new outlook on this topic, only to never go through with it? How many days had she laid around, watching cooking shows and knitting Tailmon socks?
All just so she could avoid overcoming one of the biggest obstacles in her life.
No, no more. She had decided at three o'clock that morning that enough was enough. It was time to get serious and look past this difficult period in her life.
Now, she stood on one foot in her room, staring at the stupid metal rods that were ruining her life. She grasped one in each hand and very carefully, managed to walk from one end of the room to the other. When she made it to the window, she dropped them by her side and cheered. Practicing early this morning had paid off, if only a little. Her brother and Ken had been right.
"Take that, you evil crutches!" she shouted, excited. "I am no match for you!" She laughed to herself and clapped her hands. Stepping on her foot at a wrong angle, she winced. "Ow, ow, ow," she hopped over to her bed.
Ken slowly made his way back towards the apartment complex of his best friend again. He felt drained after what has happened. After spending a few hours outside to chill his head, and calling Tachikawa san to cancel the scheduled meeting, Ken looked down at the bags he was holding.
He wasn’t sure if now’s be the best time for him to visit the younger Yagami, especially since he wasn’t at his best. But it was true Miyako’s Christmas present is long over-due, for Hikari, and it was also true that he had notified Hikari he’d swing by soon. Pushing back the urge to ride on the bus back to Tamachi, Ken stood in front of the building.
“Short visit. Short.” Ken thought to himself, as he’s pressed the button beside the name tag, “Yagami”
Sitting on her bed, Hikari rubbed her ankle in vain. "I guess I got too excited there, huh, Tailmon?" she said to the cat like Digimon, who was currently napping at the end of the bed. She heard a buzzing noise. Perfect! Time to practice! Hopping over, she grabbed her crutches and made her way to the hallway. Pressing the button, she spoke into the speaker. "Who is it?"
Ken answered. "Yagami san. It's Ichijouji."
Hikari raised her eyebrows. Ken was being awfully formal today. "Oh, Ken! Come on up!"
The blue haired boy slowly made up the stairs, instead of taking the elevator. When he arrived at the familer door, he knocked.
Hearing a knock at the door, Hikari hobbled over to it. She hadn't been expecting Ken, but he had said he was going to stop by. Besides, now she could show him that she had been practicing. She was just too proud of herself right now.
Swinging the door open, she smiled brightly. "Hey, Ken!" she said brightly, "Come on in!"
Ken tried to smile brightly at seeing Hikari’s face. He stepped in.“Thank you Hikari san. But I’m here only to drop off a couple things for you today.” Still keeping his shoes on, and hoping that his emotions didn’t sip through, Ken politely declined, then brought out the packages.
Hikari nodded and smiled softly. "Oh, that's alright!" she glanced at the packages. "You didn't have to bring me anything..."
“Actually, they’re not all from me.” Ken brought out a purple package. “This one is from Inoue san….” The boy handed the girl a present from Miyako with icy fingers. “I stopped by at her place earlier.” Feeling the blade sliding against his innards again, he felt his blood draining from his face and bit his lips. He went back to his poker face quickly. This really wasn’t a time to get depressed. Forcing a smile up on his face, he brought out the other package. A neat box, wrapped in blue paper.
“This, is from my ski trip.”
Accepting them, Hikari watched Ken, a smile never leaving her face. "Are you alright?" she asked.
Ken ruffled his hair. “I’m okay… Just a little tired. Why do you ask, Yagami san?” He politely smiled.
Hikari folded her arms over her chest, still smiling. "Yagami-san? You're being very formal. Just a couple of weeks ago...I was Hikari-chan, even Hikari to you," she frowned. "You just don't seem yourself."
Ken shook his head and sighed. “No fooling you I guess. No… I’m not feeling myself today.” He brought a hand to his face, and a pained look emerged. “It’s just...a personal issue.” He paused, then sighed. “I’ll get over it, given a couple days.” Raising his head to face his friend, Ken apologized. “I’m sorry Hikari-chan.”
Hikari glanced down, unsure of what to say. "It's alright, Ken..." she looked up at him. "I understand. I hope you feel better soon, though! And thank you, for the gift!"
Ken smiled weakly. “You’re welcome. ”
Tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, Hikari motioned towards the door. "I'll let you go," she said, opening it. "You should go home and have some rest."
“Thank you.” He bowed.
He stopped as he was about to leave. Turning to face brown haired girl, he opened his mouth and said, “I’ll feel better the next time I visit. I promise.”
The soccer player looked at Hikari sincerely.
"I hope so!" Hikari said, smiling. "Oh! Ken!" she said, excitedly. How could she have forgotten. "Look!" she walked from the door, over to the couch and back again. She grinned. "I've been practicing!"
A small smile crept up on Ken’s face. “Fantastic.” Ken gave her a thumb up.
“Show me the next time.” His tone gentle, he waved his hand at his friend bidding farewell for now.
Nodding, she waved back. "I will."
Ken walked out the building and sat himself down on the bus to Tamachi. Feeling the full force of winter, he shivered. So complicated… Taking a breath inward, he leaned against the window of the bus, and invited sleep, since at least, while it lasted, the darkness will surely numb the feeling.
