In a place where the icecream truck plays "La Cucaracha", what can you do but laugh?
I was in a ghettoish/barrioish place this morning, for an errand at the DMV, oh joy! The lines are always shorter there than at any other office I've been so that's where I go and yes, apparently I'm still alive. It's a longer drive and people look at me like I'm nuts when I enter the building but I rather do that than wait hours and hours at the local offices, heh. I had a bunch of interesting chats, as usual, as I stick out like a sore thumb being the only errrrr, let's call it natural blonde in there, haha. I do wonder what people think in situations like this. I've been the minority in places we lived so it's not a novel situation and I just don't care. I don't link immediate "danger" to this as white Americans seem to do and I guess that just makes me an alien once again. Anyway, a woman there told me about the Cucaracha song and what I found is this:
La cucaracha, la cucaracha
Ya no puede caminar
Porque le falta, porque no tiene
Marihuana que fumar.
The cockroach, the cockroach
Can't walk anymore
Because it lacks, because it doesn't have,
Marijuana to smoke.
Apparently, there are different plays on words and improvised lyrics but this one is popular.
It makes me laugh even more thinking of the old icecream truck cruising the area.
