I would like to say this is unbelievable but in the last few years I have realized to never underestimate people's stupidity.

I really feel for this kid.

Yeah, what did he actually do that warrents this kind of punishment? Just because these people are hysterical he can't go to school there anymore and graduate? No charges were filed. I don't get it and I don't see how they can even get through with this.

I did some follow up on this because it really ticked me off. The map in question had been up for months and was only the cause for freaking out after Virginia Tech. When criticized, the police said that they found 4 swords and a hammer in his room as their cause for his punishment.

I think he will still receive his degree but he is not allowed to attend the ceremony.

Oh, very interesting, thanks. That explains it better than the above alone -- but yeah, they clearly overreacted. Poor kid.

This is just stupid. In my school district, kids have been sent to the alternative school for bringing nail clippers to school. In trying to prevent tragedies like VT from happening, folks start taking things to the extreme. Now school districts are using racial profiling to take their overreaction to a whole new level.

Dumb.

Indeed. This is a culture of fear. The current administration has been pushing it even further. It's funny in a way when you're from someplace else... But it's also tragic. Nail clippers, that's crazy. How do you feel about the gun issue in general? Do you think people have a right to own them? To me the whole idea seems completely crazy -- but I'm wasn't born here so I'm always curious what people think who were.

I think it's time to revisit the 2nd Amendment. At the time it was written, we were fighting for independence, and the right to bear arms was necessary. I don't believe it's necessary anymore. I think all the crazies have proven that we just can't handle it. A waiting period means absolutely zero when you can easily get a gun off the street.

As far as the nail clipper situation, I've had to turn in a student (a 3rd grader) for bringing a Swiss Army knife to school. She had no intention of using it as a weapon. In fact, she kept saying it was just a nail clipper, but district policy required me to turn her in. I felt horrible about it, but in the back of my mind, I hearing, "What if?" So maybe, in a small way, I'm part of the problem. By the way, her mom pulled her out of school before the hearing was held. She probably would've been sent to another school, since she was too young to go to the alternative school ( ... )

I agree with you on the gun issue. The "need" is long outdated and I can see nothing good coming from it, ever. It's interesting that a lot of people here feel so strongly about it still and claim it as their "right". I've always thought that in a roundabout way, it must tie in with the notion of "no government involvement". Logic would dictate that, speaking in percent, the majority should feel either indifferent or be against guns... and yet, the law remains untouched.
