Today was the big day, the Prom Dance 2007. Every year Sterling Heights P&R puts on a prom for cognitively impaired adults in the community. And as I learned today, it is actually like a real prom, they go all out. Some people arrive in limos, most have dates, and everybody dresses up in formal wear, tuxes and all. So today I prepared for that, helping Diane pick up the cakes and the helium and everything, Then I helped another girl set up the picture area and since the theme was garden party we did stuff with flower petals (there will be pictures!). The inside was very nicely decorated, actually I would say nicer then any prom I ever went to! There was even a balloon arch. The dance was so much fun, these people know how to have a good time! One thing when you are working with the cognitively impaired, there is no self-concious inhibition, everyone just dances and has a blast. The DJ was good and was nice to the crowd. My only problem was this highschool volunteer. He actually asked me to dance...at the special needs prom! He followed me everywhere, I finally had to hide so he would leave me alone. Once when we were dancing though (yea, he asked me twice, I am too nice!) one of the actuall participants cut in, it was hilarious! So I danced with him instead thank God. I will probobly put pictures up, it was fun times!...other than the minor who had the hots for me, ah, what can you do? I may right more later, but I just got back and I worked duringt the day starting at 10 am and then worked straight through til the dance got over at 10 pm and then cleaned up afterwards. Basically, it just makes my heart happy to see these people enjoying their life and having the opportunity to have normal experiences (like prom), like everybody else does. They truly love thier lives and it is inspiring. And they don't judge each other, they are so open and caring.
