Sex and love are two very different things. Our culture says we are to only have sex with our sole lover or spouse. Only you know if this norm works best for you, but if it doesn't that doesn't mean others (lovers) agree.
I'm so sorry you're in love and and in pain. Perhaps the sexual exploration wasn't worth the loss. Perhaps it was. Pick yourself up, dust off, and move forward knowing you've learned which is more important to you (whichever it may be). It's always good to realize when you've learned something important - it is knowledge you'll take with you throughout your life.
It sounds like you aren't the only one who was hurt. Perhaps he needs you to touch his arm or hold him. There is no going back. What's done is done. Either you two can find a way to accept each other's reasons and feelings or you can't. Sometimes it takes time to know which it will be.
I hope you find yourself again soon. There a so many more people that care about you and love you than you can even imagine. It might be a good time to get back to songwriting!
