Loving or wanting?

Apparently, in most of the languages there is a specific word for loving, may it be love, liebe, aimer, amare, etc... There is the same exact word in spanish: amar. The thing is we almost never use "te amo" when we love someone, it would sound too litterate and affected. Instead of it we say normally "te quiero" that means "I want you" . Is that the reason why spanish loves are supposed to be passionate and possessive? Lately there have been here an increasing number of men killing the women that had left them, it´s with them or with nobody else, that isn´t love, that´s possession, but well, in general with people that surround me it´s not this way, I must say, we are all quite normal typical couples as any I can find anywhere in similar european countries.

So what do you think, do you possess the one you love in certain way or not?

Well, that was just a stupid reflexion, due to a 6h train trip from Santander to Madrid, and to 3 weeks of missing the one I "want" probably... hehe
