I went to the Midlands Expo with Hayley (
angelbless) and my friend Emily on yesterday and met up why Hayley's online friend, also called Emily (I'm referring to my Emily as Em and Hayley's as Emily for the rest of this). It. Was. AWESOME. I have photos, I have more video than my hard drives can stomach (and my laptop so hates me for it) so I'm going to have to make another post just for the video (YouTube is going to hate love me).
I found the TARDIS! Sadly not the TARDIS so I couldn't skip to Easter. I tend to think of what I'm wearing as my 'Doctor outfit', since it's kinda eccentric on my part - that and my jacket is a bit like a blue version of Nine's, except shorter. I was a little miffed because I wanted a Sonic Screwdriver and I couldn't find one! (so I'm off to Forbidden Planet on Monday to get one) The one thing that surprised me most was that no-one batted an eyelid when I wore my mage hat for practically the whole day. Then again I supposed I was sanely dressed compared to everyone else. I'm aiming for a full Black Mage cosplay next time alongside my sister's White Mage (I'm not sure if I'm keen on her having a mallet).
I'm guessing the TARDIS and the Dalek belonged to this Ten cosplayer - he was fiddling with the wiring in the TARDIS to get the top light flashing (he had lifted the top off like you would a car bonnet when I came round the corner) and he actually got inside the Dalek to move it around (with a headset for the voice, I really should have asked how he'd set that up). I found the sight of the Tenth Doctor in half a Dalek downright hilarious thanks to reading the Ten Doctors fan comic. He was actually about to walk off when:
Hayley: "No! You've got to stay by your TARDIS!"
Doctor Guy: "I'm gonna be here all day aren't I?"
She may or may not have nodded at that whilst pretending to look innocent. She got the Sonic Screwdriver shone at her afterwards, probably as payback (it certainly caught her off guard, since she didn't get a picture). She bailed out from hugging the Dalek, but she did get in its way later on and got chased by it.
This scarecrow was like a bad smell - I kept bloody running into him all day! This was just after he'd snuck up on Em and Hayley as we were looking at some anime bags (unfortunately I didn't have the camera on at that point).
Me: *Sees scarecrow come up behind them* "Erm, guys?" *points*
*They turn round and see him right behind them* "Woah!!"
Me: *as I'm filming * "Is this a bad time to admit I have a phobia of scarecrows?"
Unexpected Earthshock!Cyberman ftw! (We were sitting down for the masquerade and Em said "there's a Cyberman over there." I whipped round, asked Hayley for the camera and shot over there to grab a few pics. [The scarecrow decided to crash this one too])
Not long after I got back to my seat, all the little kids that were there went to the front to see Sarah Jane (not that Sarah Jane, the Cbeebies presenter) and I saw a little boy by the stage in a blue pinstriped suit. I was a little puzzled until I saw that he had a pair of glasses and I realised he was dressed as the Doctor! He couldn't have been much more than one bless him. He was adorable!
My entry for the Artist Alley contest. Only doodles, but you can guess I'm really out of practice with Ed from FMA. There was a pre-made category too - had I'd know I'd have taken one of my fan art paintings with me and entered it.
Lord Vader! We saw him and the Stormtroopers as we were entering the International Centre and I ended up walking through the door backwards 'cos I started filming him. We caught up with them near the comic stall (was so tempted to buy all the issues of the Forgotten, but I'm waiting for the compilation release) and one of the Stormtroopers put his hand over the camera. Speaking of which, there was a really creepy MIB/Agent Smith walking round and he gave me a warning luck and point his gun at me at one point.
These two were awesome! And they won the Under 15's Best Costume category at the Masquerade. There was a Miss Evangelista in her FODT getup and I was bricking myself throughout her walk-on as I was terrified she was gonna whip her veil off.
This was the only cosplayer Hayley plucked up the courage to ask for a photo. And look! Bananaman!
Because of the lack of Doctor Who in my childhood, I grew up watching Robot Wars, and I am a HUGE Robot Wars fan. So when I saw Tornado and Hypnodisc in the, er, metal, I got a little overexcited. Who cares if they weren't fighting, I saw Tornado and Hypnodisc! *squee!*
That's it on the photos side (my sister took most of them). I'll make another post with highlight from my footage and video (I inadvertently ended up flowing another Ten cosplayer at one point) - including a massive high-speed conga line, Kenny Baker (R2D2!), a persistent running gag and one cosplayer who is now my hero. It may or may not also have me singing along to the songs (and probably badly).
