Keeping Kent sane. Part 2.

As I promised, here is another post. Yes!!! Two in two days! Impressive I know!
This semester I am taking 18 credit hours. I need them all to graduate, and even then I still have 5 credits unaccounted for. But anyway that’s beside the point. I am taking English 459: Eighteenth Century English Novel; English 215: British Literature Pre- 1750; Philosophy 210: Reason in Communication; History 628: History of the Civil Rights Movement; and last but certainly not least, Journalism 565: Effects of Mass Communication. All of my classes seem decent so far except for the Philosophy class. Now, don’t get me wrong, but the class that I’m taking now is the precursor to the class I took last Fall (PHL 211: Logic). I hated that class, and this class is what I should have learned pre-Logic. I’m hoping it won’t be too bad, but so far the teacher told us on Tuesday that we weren’t to have discussion sections this week; well then he told us on Thursday that we were having discussion section AND that our homework was due during that section. In a panic, I did that homework during his lecture. In the meantime I was so wrapped up in getting used to my class I forgot that I had an assignment due in English 459 on Thursday. So much for starting the semester off well, right?
However, class is pretty cool as I said. I’m very excited about Eng 459, History, and Journalism. Journalism is probably going to be my most fun class this semester. As I said before the class title is Effects of Mass Communication. That entails discussing the effects of media on the population in matters such as tobacco campaigns, sex, AIDS (both in America and Africa), violence, and our buying habits. It sounded much cooler when the teacher described it. Also, before Thanksgiving, we’ll be looking at war photography and discussing how we see those images affect our political and economic opinions. The books for that class are also pretty interesting.
Speaking of books, I think I have now spend somewhere around $370 on my textbooks this year. That’s outrageous for me. I usually don’t have to spend that much because I take English classes that either get all the texts out of the way with some sort of anthology, or we have all paperback texts. I don’t mind buying books (since I do have a dream of having a totally kick-ass library when I’m older) but I fear for my sanity on the day I’ll be receiving that bill in the mail. Let’s see…what else…
Not much else has been going on. I’ve gone to class and have been trying to get all of the buildings and rooms and times in my head so I no longer have to carry around my schedule. I forgot my piece of paper with all of that info on it on Wednesday; I realized this when I was almost all the way to my first class (I only have two classes on Wednesday: English 215 and Journalism). I knew I didn’t have time to rush back to my room and figure out where my class was; I knew the building but not the room number. So like an idiot, I got into the building and then when a group of people walked by I asked, “Is anyone going to English 215?” A whole bunch of people looked at me like I was a total jackass, and then one girl said she was. I followed her to class and then didn’t feel as stupid. Hey, whatever. At least I got to class.
Other than class and work and just sitting around, I’ve been hanging out with Mel for the past couple of days. That’s been fun. I went over there last night and we watched Grey’s Anatomy for a couple of hours. Today we met up on State St. and went shopping for her books; then we headed over to Steven Barry so she could get a shirt for the game tomorrow. It was interesting, Shannon was at their apartment when we got back. It was good though. We talked like normal, but it’s still a little odd because neither of us bothered to acknowledge the fact that we haven’t spoken to each other since February. Oh well, as long as it’s not awkward for us to be in the same room, I’m happy. I plan on spending time over there with Mel because obviously the girls around here are all a little neurotic. I don’t think I mentioned that in yesterday’s post, but basically the girl that lives next to me is the college freshman version of a Stepford Wife. Seriously. I’m not making that up. And to top it off, she’s rushing some sorority. Yea, basically everything I have ever not wanted to participate in is what makes up this girl.
But anyway, things are good. I hope I don’t die by the end of the semester. I have a paper due almost every week. If you have heard about my crazy nightmares and habit of not sleeping well, I came up with the idea that I was going to start doing pilates on a regular basis. I started today, and I think I love it. I feel calmer already. Tonight is a toss up as far as what my night will consist of. Mel wanted to go out and drink, but she wasn’t sure about her actual plans. I am just feeling a bit lazy, but who knows. There is also a outdoor screening of Akeelah and the Bee pretty much right outside of my dorm building. So I was considering going to that. Maybe I’ll just be lazy like always. Oh the choices! And on that note, I leave you all to your wonderful nights.
