Godot froze, shocked for several different reasons. One, of course, was the fact that somebody knew his real name and had the nerve to call him by it… but that detail, and all of the others, paled in comparison to the source of the painfully familiar voice.
He half turned and, at the sight of the feminine figure, narrowed his eyes behind his visor. It wasn’t really her, he knew that, but the voice had been enough to make him pause. As he returned to the pitiful display before him, he heard long strides from the other side of the room, and found himself forcefully spun around to face the illusion.
“Diego,” Not-Mia hissed, eyes narrowed furiously, “You have to stop. Phoenix didn’t do anything to deserve this.”
Godot snorted and made a move to tear his arm out of her surprisingly strong grip, “You’re not real-how would you know what Trite doesn’t deserve?”
“He’s engaged to the real top prosecutor in the country; no matter how good you used to be at defending, you won’t get away with a crime you actually committed.” It was a good try, but, under the forced calm, there was a note of hysteria.
The prosecutor ignored the woman’s reasoning and hoisted the unconscious defense attorney up by the collar; it was satisfying to see Trite get what was coming to him. Honestly, he hadn’t intended to make any move tonight, but he’d already been so angry with the dark haired man… hearing him talk to Mia in the courthouse library was too much. It may not have made much sense to anybody else, but that didn’t matter to the older man.
Misinterpreting his action-which had really been for assessment more than anything else-as aggressive, the woman gave one last desperate shout, “Goddamn it, Diego! He’s our son!”
In an ironic echo of the original yell, Godot stopped where he stood; how could Maya Fey have known about… that part of his and Mia’s relationship? She hadn’t been alive at the time-only Mia, her parents, and Diego himself knew about that particular mistake; he was certain that his kitten wouldn’t have mentioned it to her little sister. And… Trite…? There… there was no way that was the truth.
