Honestly, Mrs. Cape-Goat would understand if they didn’t have some dusty old book to back the case up.
As much as she would have liked to say that she was doing this service out of the goodness of her heart, Maya couldn’t. She knew for a fact that, if word that Phoenix had been neglecting his own wellbeing for stupid reasons-and that she’d done nothing to stop the defense attorney-ever reached Edgeworth, there would be hell to pay. Honestly, she didn’t see why the prosecutor had room to talk-he was more of a workaholic than his fiancé, really… though, admittedly, he usually knew what he was wasting his time on… Oh well, maybe this would earn her some points, somehow.
The thoughts of not-quite-blackmail quickly vanished from her mind, though, as soon as she wrenched open the heavy door to the library.
Surprise was the first thing to replace the musings on mock-extortion-had prosecutor Godot been here all night? She hadn’t seen him earlier, and she’d wandered through the entire library in a desperate attempt to entertain herself. Confusion was the second-was that… blood on the white haired man’s clothes? Had he cut himself on something? He looked just fine, though… Last was horror, as Maya realized that the blood didn’t belong to Godot.
“Nick!”
Nobody responded to her shout; the defense attorney was unconscious-or nearly unconscious, it was impossible to tell-and Godot was in a world of his own, taking out his rage on the younger man. Maya practically flew across the room and franticly latched on to the prosecutor’s arm in a futile attempt to stop him, but he simply shrugged her off, whipping his arm out of her grip and accidentally spattering her with a small amount of blood-not that he took any notice of that fact.
“Stop it!” The spirit medium shrieked, trying to restrain the other in some way; it was a lost cause, though-he was so much bigger than her that it didn’t make any difference at all, “Nick never did anything to you! Why do you hate him so much!?”
This time, Maya wasn’t shrugged off so much as flung away; she stumbled backwards, and ran into a nearby chair, which caused her to topple over. Through her terrified tears, only one thing occurred to the spirit medium: Godot was strong enough to kill Phoenix and, if she didn’t do anything, that was exactly what was going to happen… but there was nothing she could do.
Maya was too distracted to notice the fuzzy feeling in the back of her skull-and, even if she did, she would have passed it off as a side effect from hitting her head against the floor-but would later thank whatever deities existed for the sensation, and the events that followed.
