A/N: I took some liberties with Phoenix's eye color. I switched it to the original color of brown to better match Diego and Mia's eyes (it is Naruhodou's eye color in GS, check the art you'll see.)

*

She checked her face for the hundredth time that day. Every hair in its place, no lipstick on her teeth, perfect. Her mother and Aunt Morgan were going out tonight, and her father had to work late.

Mia heard the car pull up. She peeked out her bedroom window. It was him. Five o'clock on the dot; just like he promised. This was his fifth time to visit her since they met. Sure he was older, but he was nice to her. He didn't treat her like some backwoods, temple priestess. Diego treated her like a woman.

She ran out to greet him, still in her training robes. He was dressed casually: khakis and a red button-up shirt.

"I'm glad you came," she said as she grabbed his hand.

"I always keep my promises to a cute kitten like you," he said as he took a sip from his coffee cup.

"Ever since you started school, that cup has been glued to your hand," Mia chided him.

"A man has to stay awake for hot dates, that's one of my rules," she smirked.

"You should really come out with a book of all your rules."

Mia pulled him into the manor and tried to hurry to her bedroom. It was a simple room. There was a single bed in the corner, a nightstand next to it, and a dresser across the room. Among the the traditional Fey Clan scrolls were posters more suited for a girl of fifteen. Mainly of rock stars, television shows, and other such things she had acquired on her trips with her father.

She sat on the bed and began to disrobe. Diego let out a hearty laugh.

"Kitten slow down. We have all evening to play."

"I know, I just want to make you happy."

He sat next to her and placed a hand on her back. His tone turned serious, "You know you don't have to do this to make me happy."

She looked him in the eye, "I know, but I want to do this."

He smiled, "Alright, but let's take it slow. I know how to treat a lady right."

*

They were nearing climax when Mia's father walked in.

"Daddy. . .we were just talking."

Mia had the sheets pulled up to her neck, her eyes wide with fear. Diego lay frozen under her.

"Uh huh. And does talking to Mr. Armando require your panties to be over here," he said pointing next to the night stand.

It defied all possibility, but Mia's eyes grew even larger in that moment.

"Get dressed and meet me in the living room. . .alone."

Mia obeyed her father, dressing quickly.

"You might want to stay; he'll probably want to talk to you too."

Diego nodded and dressed while Mia went to the living room.

Her father was sitting on the couch reading the newspaper. He motioned for her to sit next to him.

“So, you were having a little 'chat' with that young man?” he said as he put down the paper. Mia nodded.

“And does this Mr. Armando know your only fifteen?” Mia shrugged.

“I don't know what your mother has told you about sex, but what you were doing with that man could get him in a lot of trouble.”

“Your not going to tell her are you?” Mia's lips pursed together and her eyes drooped.

“I won't this time, but if I ever hear or see that man here again-”

“I promise Daddy, I won't ever do it again.”

“You don't have to lie Mia, just wait to you're older,” his voice was calm now.

“Yes sir.”

“Now send in Mr. Armando, I need to have little chat with him.”

Mia really wished her dad hadn't used that particular word. He met her gaze and laughed at his error.

She hadn't seen him in months, and the sick feeling never seemed to leave her in his absence. Mia began a strict training regiment at her father's insistence. Her mother and aunt were pleased at the man's encouragement and found many exercises to engage the young girl in. He kept his promise not to tell them of what happened, and she agreed to keep away from Diego.

Mia knew that her father didn't hate the young man. He just didn't want a nineteen year old college student spending time with his daughter. She had heard this much when she listened in on their conversation those five months back.

Her new training exercises did a number on her body. Now Mia was tired all the time, plagued by constant hunger, and stopped menstruating completely. Her mother had gone away on some big conference, so she couldn't ask her if this was normal. Aunt Morgan insisted that all the Fey women went through the same thing.

Mia thought that with all her hard work she would have lost weight, not gained any. The acolyte robes hid this from everyone. She even tried more traditional exercises, but the weight continued to increase.

Her mother and Aunt Morgan were away with a client, and her dad went into town to help a client one morning, leaving her alone. Mia was getting ready to take a shower when she felt something move. She paused. The young acolyte shrugged it off as gas as she walked into the bathroom, but something in the mirror caught her eye.

Something was moving across her abdomen. It was in the same spot that her stomach stuck out. Clear as day, something was inside her. Mia ran into her room and began looking in her books. She couldn't find anything about the demon in them, but something else caught her eye. Mia had no choice but to break the promise she made to her father.

The phone rang three times before someone answered. It was a woman's voice.

“Hello?” the woman sounded annoyed.

“Can I speak to Diego please?” Mia's voice was wavering.

“Uh. He's a little busy right now.”

“Please tell him Mia call-”

“Kitten, is that you?” he also sounded annoyed.

“You need to come here now!” Tears welled up in her eyes.

“What's wrong? I thought I wasn't allowed to see you.”

“I'm in trouble, please hurry.”

*

It didn't take Diego long to get to the village. Her parents were still gone, and probably wouldn't be back for several hours.

Like the last time he came to the village, Mia pulled him into her bedroom. Nothing much had changed in that time other than the color of the linens and a few of the posters.

Mia began to disrobe.

“Kitten, if you asked me here for that I'm afraid. . .” She placed a finger on his lips to quiet him.

Mia continued to shed her clothing. He stared at her swelling abdomen. His eyes grew wide when he saw 'it' move. Diego placed a hand over the tiny appendage that dared show itself to the world. Tears formed in his eyes. He wiped them away before they fell to his cheeks.

“Avoid unplanned pregnancy, its one of my rules,” he tried to joke, but Mia frowned at him.

“I felt it move this morning.” Mia touched her swollen stomach, idly rubbing it.

He shook his head and motioned for her to dress. Diego cradled his head in his hands.

“Kitten, how long have you known?”

“This morning,” she placed a hand on his shoulder.

He let out a groan; his head sank further into his hands.

“We need to go the doctor.”

Mia heard a car pull up outside. Why did they always have to come home early. The door slammed, and she knew immediately who it was. She ran out to the living room to greet her father.

“We were just talking, for real this time,” urgency in her voice.

“Mia, there is nothing you can say to me that will change how disappointed I am at you right now,” he said as he set his briefcase down.

“I'm pregnant.”

The ride back from the clinic was dead silent. Mia sat up front with her father while Diego sat by himself in the back seat. She clutched the ultrasound photo in her hand.

Her father broke the silence, “Please tell me again why a nineteen year old man has the nerve to have unprotected sex?”

Diego held his head down. Would her father believe it if she said she rushed them. That they just forgot in the heat of the moment.

“I'm sorry.” Mia had tears in her eyes.

“Well, twenty weeks is too late to reverse what happened.”

At the realization, Mia started to openly cry. “I don't get it, he didn't even. . .”

Her father pulled over.

“Sweetie, I didn't mean to make you cry. Men don't have to finish for a girl get in trouble.” He grabbed her hand and held it in his.

“Kitten, I'm sorry too. This is all my fault. I should have known better.”

Her father glared at Diego, but his look softened when he saw the concern in the young man's eyes.

“Do I have to tell her?” Mia finally blurted out through choked sobs.

Yes, Mia. You made this happen, it is your responsibility to tell her.

*

Her mother's jaw dropped when she heard the news. At first she cried, but then she got very serious.

“We can't keep this baby,” her voice was unwavering.

“Mom, why?” Mia began to cry.

“The elders, they will be disappointed.”

“Misty, that's bull and you know it,” anger rose in her father's voice. It surprised both women.

“Mom, I want to keep it, its my baby.” Mia clutched the ultrasound in her hand.

Her mother stood still, looking away from her husband and daughter, “If its a girl, we can raise it as your sister.”

“And if its a boy?” Mia tried to hide her hope.

She was blunt, “We can't keep a boy.”

“Misty, you're not making sense.”

Mia ran out of the room to join Diego. Her father advised him not to be there when they told her mom. They heard the argument between the Feys. It consisted of her mother staying adamant about her position and her father trying to change the master's mind.

One thing struck the young parents.

“Boys have no place in our world John.”

Both Mia and Diego stood silent for several moments.

“Kitten, your mom is right, either way,” He didn't look at her when he spoke.

“What do you mean?”

“I can't take the baby either,” Diego was quiet.

“What?” She couldn't believe what was happening. Mia began to feel alone, like she was the only one who wanted, loved her baby.

Mia ran out of the house. Her father was on the porch, cigarette in hand.

“Daddy you smoke?” When he saw her, he put the cigarette out.

“Not in ten years.”

“Its bad for you,” concern growing in her voice.

“One cigarette isn't going to kill me dear.”

She sat next to him. Mia silently prayed for her child to be a girl.

“You know I have no say in this family, right?”

“Yes, Daddy, but I still listen to you,” she tried to sound upbeat.

“I know, and thank you,” he hesitated for a moment, “Look, I hope we can keep the baby either way.”

Mia nodded, “But either way, Mom will get her way despite what we want.”

He put an arm around her. She began to cry again.

“Hey, I know this doesn't mean much, but I'm working late tomorrow and your mom and Aunt Morgan are going out of town.”

Her eyes grew wide.

“I wouldn't have any clue if a certain young man came to visit you. Even if that young man went into your room to chat.”

“Daddy, I thought you said. . .”

“Mia, you're already pregnant, how much more trouble can you get into?”

She continued to pray everyday that the baby was a girl. Mia knew in heart that her prayers would be answered. She didn't listen to her mom or Diego, both insisted that the baby's gender had been predetermined at conception.

Mia felt an odd sensation. If it had been any other time her life, she would have sworn she peed on herself. The pregnancy book she read said otherwise. She had been having strong contractions for the last hour as well.

She called Diego and her dad. They rushed to the village to be with her.

Only her mother, father, and the midwife were allowed in the room with Mia at first. After Mia complained, Diego was allowed to see her.

The labor felt like an eternity. Diego rubbed her back and held her hand as each contraction hit her. The Midwife checked her.

She took her mother aside. They talked in hushed tones in the corner.

“Is my baby okay?” Diego wiped her brow.

The baby was breech. If they didn't turn it, Mia and the baby could die.

“Well, what's the problem? Your a midwife, right? Turn the baby.” yelled Diego.

“Her arthritis is bad.”

“So your going to let your own daughter die!”

Her mother snapped, “No, but if you give me a chance, the midwife will explain what we need to do.”

“Your father is going to have to turn it. . .”

“No, I want Diego to do it,” she whined.

It became Diego's job the reach into Mia and turn the baby. Her mother and father held Mia in place, tilting her from side to side to help reposition the baby while the midwife guided them. They righted the baby, and her labor continued.

Finally it was time to push. She squeezed Diego's hand for each round.

“I can see the head. Just a few more and we'll be done.”

Mia felt like she was going to die if she had to push one more time. After that moment she heard a small cry.

“Its a boy.”

A boy? Mia's heart sank. The midwife handed her the cleaned up bundle. Immediately her mother tried to take him, but Dad stopped her.

“At least give her a day Misty.”

She tried not get attached, but that little face, Mia couldn't help herself. Instincts kicked in and she began to feed her son.

“Kitten, I don't think. . .”

“Diego, I can't let him starve.”

*

Diego drove them to the orphanage in the city. Mia cried the whole way there. She sat in the back seat with her son. Holding his little hand and consoling the poor child.

They arrived at her son's new home. It was a cold brick building, devoid of feeling. There were some young boys playing together in a caged-in play yard. None of them smiled.

“I can't. . .let's run away,” hope filled her eyes.

“Mia, you know I can't. I have to go back to school,” he parked the car.

“I can't leave my baby here,” she said as she pulled him from the car seat.

Mia held onto him tight. Her nameless child stared back at her. His brown eyes looking into hers. Mom advised her not name him. If he didn't have a name it wouldn't hurt as bad.

Mia handed the child to Diego, “I can't do it.”

“Wait in the car,” Diego handed her the keys.

He nodded and took the boy with him. The baby was crying, reaching for Mia. Diego tried to quiet him, but to no avail.

Mia got back in the car and turned it on. It was unseasonably cold for the time of year. The radio came on. A very melodic song was playing.

It's not the things you say / It's not the things you do /It must be something more.

She stared at the Diego as he walked in. Her son was still crying. Tears slipped down her cheeks.

And if I feel this way for so long / Tell me is it all for nothing / Just don't walk out the door.

Diego was walking back to the car now. He wiped his eyes as he looked down at his feet. Mia tried to hide her tears, be brave. The last words of the song haunted her.

If I had a photograph of you / It's something to remind me / I wouldn't spend my life just wishing.

Misty Fey was wrong. Her son not having a name, it was the worst feeling in the world. Second only to never knowing his fate.
