There was a note stuck to the door. Phoenix grabbed it and read:

Me and Pearly went to get ice cream. Be back soon. Maya.

Knowing her, they would be gone at least thirty minutes. Maya would have to taste every flavor before she finally chose.

Phoenix went to the inner office desk and sat down. He checked his phone. Five missed calls, all from Miles. Phoenix knew he shouldn't have run away, but he just couldn't help it. At least he knew Miles still cared for him. There was one voice mail.

“Wri… Phoenix please come home. I don't know what's wrong, but I can only fix it if you are honest with me. Please call back soon. If you don't. . . I'll come looking for you.” His voice was strained and his words sounded thick.

Phoenix had tried to tell him before, but just couldn't. What would Miles think of him if he really knew the truth?

He didn't want to dwell on those thoughts now. Instead, he unlocked the bottom right drawer and reached in, pulling out a sketchbook. In the book were dozens of drawings. Some were just little sketches, but others he had taken the time to color. Phoenix didn't like to share his drawings with others. He personally thought his drawings were not good, but if he had showed to others they would have disagreed.

Phoenix flipped to one of Pearls and Maya. They were building a sandcastle at the park. Pearls had a look of frustration on her face and Maya's gaze was deep in concentration. This was one of the drawings he had created out of nothing. Phoenix tried to keep the emotions of the girls true to themselves. He should really take them to the park, but lately he always seemed so busy with wedding plans.

Another had himself and Miles. The prosecutor was on bended knee and held a tiny ring box in his hand. He was wearing his usual attire, without the suit coat. Phoenix hated drawing himself, but didn't have a choice in this picture. In this one Phoenix recreated the scene of their official engagement. Many of their friends had a hard time believing that Miles actually proposed, and an even harder time that he went down on one knee to do it. Phoenix planned on showing this drawing to his fiance, but left the sketchbook here on accident. He should really call him back. Let him know everything is alright. Maybe in a few minutes.

Phoenix felt warm now. He knew Miles loved him and wanted to be with him. But. . .but what if Miles knew the truth. What if he unraveled all the lies Phoenix had weaved over the years. All of his innocent questions secretly tore Phoenix's heart.

“When can I meet your parents?” He had asked six months into their relationship

“Is your father going to walk you down the aisle?” This one when they were fitted for their tuxes.

“When can I get your list of family and friends to invite?” After they picked the ceremony/reception hall.

“Thank you for helping me today.”

“It was not a problem Wright. They were trying to lynch you without a fair chance.”

“Seriously dude, that was just unfair,” Larry Butz joined Phoenix and Miles at the park after school.

“If you two aren't doing anything, maybe you can come to my house? My father won't mind.”

“Dude, yeah, that will be awesome. Nick never lets me come to his house.”

A curious expression grew on his new companion, and an uncomfortable feeling grew in his own stomach.

“Well, my dad is very strict. He doesn't like to be woken up by my friends playing.” There was an urgency Phoenix's voice.

“Oh, does your father need to sleep during the day because he works at night?” Miles asked.

“Uh, yeah. He works at night. You guys go on ahead. I need to go home first.”

Miles wrote down his address for the spiky-haired boy and went off with Larry. Phoenix walked to his home alone. Another world war awaited him as he arrived. A plate broke as he set his school bag down. A loud thud against the wall and heavy breathing mingled with soft crying.

“I'm sorry, but someone has to clean the house.” His foster mother was yelling through choked sobs.

“Dammit woman, when I say don't make a sound a mean don't make a sound.” His foster father's speech was slurred

Phoenix entered the kitchen and they both turned to look at him. The young boy knew what was coming, and thought that by now he would be used to it.

Phoenix finally told him that his family had disowned him for his lifestyle. It wasn't far from the truth. He suspected that Miles knew there was more to the story, but didn't have enough evidence to confront Phoenix.

The defense attorney flipped to another sketch. The chief, Mia, stared up at him from the page. She was sitting at her desk. He really missed having her around. Channeling was one thing, but to have the real Mia here. . . .

There were so many stories he didn't get to share with her. Phoenix was always willing to bore her with another tale of his shenanigans with Larry or his own misadventures in college. He avoided talking about his parents, but she never really asked either. Mia was always ready to listen, although, he never understood why she would care. His stories weren't that interesting.

Phoenix heard the inner door open. Only twenty minutes? Pearls must have told Maya to hurry.

“I'm back here,” he yelled.

Before he could stow away his sketchbook a shadow loomed over Phoenix. The darkness in the room was broken by a dull red glow.
