This is exactly what I wanted, omg, omg, so excited. I've only had time to read half of one so far, but trust me I'll have reactions when I'm done reading. SO EXCITED! A whole volume of real, academic analysis of Show! And Fandom! And the weird, blurry boundary between the aforementioned!!! *flail*
...If they're half-assed or poorly written I am going to cry buckets.
In other news, Monday's Castle episode that I just got to watch! Cut for spoilers, for this week and next; You've been warned!
OK, that episode? Amazing! I started off watching just for Nathan Fillion (OK, and because Stana Katic is hot) but I think the show's really hit its stride this season. Esposito and Ryan feel less like forced bit characters filling out a B-plot and more like people who are funny and wonderful and who I love. Their "interrogation" of Castle and Beckett was delicious! And while we're on that, Stana Katic rocked those pjs like nobodies business; she's clearly gorgeous, but she managed to look like someone real who actually sleeps and things; big shirt! mussy hair! And I love that her character basically lives off fast food! And Castle cooks for her but is only moderately smarmy about it! That whole scene was so cute and surprising and nice. UST is cool, but keeping a relationship completely static is unnatural.
AND THEN THE END HOMG. I was still all surprised that they already "went there" with Castle spending the night (albeit platonically) and then bam! I totally freaked out and while I'm not really a huge spoiler person (except for SPN, especially over hiatus..) but I went straight to my comp and scrounged around for confirmation that she was not, absolutely could NOT be dead. Which, clearly, she isn't (spoiler!) It should have been obvious, but the sudden escalation of the Castle/Beckett relationship, and his line about letting people go, and the preview with NO STANA...I was totally hyperventilating. And how the frig are they going to hand wave that explosion away!?
So on one hand, major props the the show for stepping up its game and convincing a cynic like me that they'd do something crazy and kill off one of their main characters when it's barely even sweeps, and on the other hand, major props for the show for not killing their awesome, fun female character (I'm looking at you, Kripke...) who plays so wonderfully off Castle's weirdness (the head-out-the-window move!!). But on a third hand that my intellectual self-image has, it would have been amazing if they really HAD gone there and offed a major character. Just to shake things up, totally change the tone of the show...woulda pissed me off, I maybe even would have cried, but it would have been ballsy. And I'd feel a bit less silly that I do for being played like the over-credulous, over-invested viewer I am ;)
