the tour,,,
This tour like the last one has so far been a big success. Going into this one was slightly easier though having gone through it before, for three months during the first leg of the Dangerous Summer Tour, as I knew what to expect this time. The break in between the tours was only two weeks (and I was in the studio for over half of that), so I hit the ground running and went straight into the shows having felt I had never left. America now feels like a second home to me, especially places where I have met so many new friends and people have given up there beds and floors for us to sleep on.
Starting off the tour in New York is always a bit of a thrill and getting a yellow taxi to were we stay from the airport is something I really look forward to. It always seems to remind me of the bigger picture and that so many of my family have never been to this great place and how lucky I am to be working here. After New York we make the trip to LA and this time around I got to see more than Hollywood and got to see it in much more depth and clarity. My publishers are here and so is my press lady so I got shown around a bit and went to a few markets and bought myself a few items for the day of the dead so I maybe could try to squeeze all of the happiness out of me.
Im sat again in LA now a month and a half later and we have already been out for nearly two months and been to a lot of new places. I have really enjoyed the new shows and going to Washington, Columbus and Boulder was a real thrill for me and the turn out was really exciting. I think its best for everyone when new people are in the audience it gives a freshness and new energy. Looking back at the shows leading to this point I have played a lot of songs and even for some of you who have heard them a million times your support and enthusiasm never lows and I want to say thank you for that. I have a big all ages show at The Mint in LA on the 3rd December, which Im really looking forward to so those of you who are currently residing in LA can catch me again there.
I have some really good shows in front of me. I have a big run in Texas which should be a lot of fun and to see Texas from the perspective of a car should be really interesting. Not that im gonna start to don myself in cowboy gear but I really liked Dallas when I was there and its rare when im on tour to actually see the make up of the city or state. Im hoping to walk or drive away from Texas educated and ready to hit Detroit, Chicago and New York with enough southern vigour to brand a bull! Im also heading to Portland which was one of my favourite places last time I visited. I didn’t get to a try a doughnut from voodoo doughnut so that’s the first thing im gonna do followed by another Elliott smith memory lane trip. I recently did a cover of his song Between The Bars in Kansas, which was another great crowd.
Im always too scared to touch his stuff because I love it so much but a friend of mine and me were singing it in the car on the long trip from beautiful Minneapolis so I played it and it went down really well. Im not sure if ill do it again however some things should be looked at and not touched or as my Nan defines it “you look with your eyes not your hands” so not to disappoint an old lady ill stick to her philosophy. Im gonna dip my hands in the Mississippi river when im in New Orleans and grab a flask and send it home to my great uncle Charlie as he is now wheelchair bound and cannot go. He first played me some of the jazz I love and on my christening wet my head with water from the Thames as he could not get any from the Mississippi. It’s surprising my head did not dissolve but he loves and still sings those songs with the famous river in the title. He also gave me a puff on a cigar when I was eight as he thought it may of helped the cough I had. A year later when my Mam smelt smoke on me he was banned from all of my birthday parties until I was sixteen!
Anyway, I finish this tour at the Mercury Lounge and if I could sell it out it would put a prize red cherry on the top of a great six months. Im aware there are not so many tickets left so please grab them now and phone up if your think you may of missed your chance. Im finishing off my first album before the European tour in January so that will hopefully be finished for the summer and ill be back in America in March. I will be playing at The Hoxton Bar and Kitchen in London on the 13th Jan with my friends The Spivs www.myspace.com/thespivsonline and Flipron www.myspace.com/flipron, so I have a further six months of excitement on front of me.
As ever you can see my gigs on the myspace at www.myspace.com/musicbobbylong and see what's going on on the facebook page.
See you over the next three weeks in the US and in Europe in January and February and thanks again for your gracious support.
