My Journal, Now in High-Density!

Aug 04, 2010 22:43

I had a good chortle earlier when I started reading my new "gym book" (the book I'm only allowed to read while I'm on the recumbant bike at the gym, ostensibly to entice me to go to the gym). The phrase "high-density" was used to describe a computer monitor.

Er, I don't think so.

Once upon a time some floppy disks were referred to as "high-density" because they packed a lot of data. (Remember floppy disks? Those little 3 1/2" colored squares you stuck in a slot on your computer? Or better still, those 5 1/4" black plastic things you were always terrified of because woe if you put your nasty, dirty fingers on the exposed part of the disk?) But I believe that when HD is used to refer to monitors and televisions it always means "high-definition". What exactly would a high-density monitor BE? This is why you get other people to read your work before it goes out into the world. They you don't just have to rely on an overworked editor to catch this stuff.

Anyway, I laughed over the author's confusion because I have known the author for 26 years. He even used to have the same job I do. And the next time I see him I'm going to have a little fun with him about his HD confusion. :D

Oh, and by the way, the book is good, even though it has that one little unintentionally funny bit. The last gym book I read was also good: The Demon's Lexicon, by Sarah Rees Brennan (who I didn't get to talk to at Infinitus, unfortunately, but I bought her book there!). The one before that I won't name because it was too sluggish and boring to be believed, despite being written by an SF luminary, and it did absolutely nothing to entice me to the gym. I was going to continue reading it but my subconscious lost it somewhere in the house. Honestly, I have no idea where the thing is now and I was halfway through it (slogging through every page). I think I may have gotten up in the night and hidden it from myself while I was asleep so I couldn't continue the self-inflicted torture.

ETA: Oh, and I almost forgot the great Prop 8 news! Saw it on an HD TV at the gym. Everyone who spoke seemed pretty smart. Perhaps one of the other high-density TVs had the folks from Fox putting in their two cents about it. ;)

It was a productive day: I got up early and baked a batch of banana-walnut muffins, then I did a batch of blueberry muffins and took some from each batch over to my friend Katherine's house (her mother just passed away and I also wanted to take a condolence card). Katherine is the angel who drove me to and from my elbow-replacement surgery and my first few physical therapy appointments, among many other things.

Then Rachel and I went to a tattoo parlor around the corner (the benefit of living in the city!) for--no, sillies NOT tattoos. She got two more holes pierced in her ears, about a quarter-inch from her original ear-piercings, and, at the age of 46, I finally got MY ears pierced! Yes, really. What's next for me--learning to drive or something really wacky? WHO KNOWS?

After I ate lunch with the kids and we watched a little more Six Feet Under (the episode when Claire first meets her Aunt Sarah, Ruth's sister) Ben and I rode our bikes downtown so he could get a checking account. A 17-year-old doesn't need a parent to co-sign (Rachel can't get one until she turns 16 next month, and then I have to co-sign on the account) but Ben asked me to come along anyway. I'm glad I did, just to make sure everything went smoothly.

Then working out, buying a nice baguette and some ice tea to go with our chicken dinner, home and dinner prep and eating and that sort of thing.

My hair is also a little shorter. YES, IT WAS A WILD AND CRAZY DAY OFF FOR ME!

Thanks to everyone for your kind and caring thoughts about my sister-in-law. We're having the service Saturday and my two oldest sisters are coming from Oklahoma and Maryland for it, plus my father-in-law is coming with us. (He always liked Tammy.)
