I was talking to my sewing teacher last night about machines. I'm toying with the idea of upgrading. My Brother CS6000i has been really great, and I think it's pretty much perfect for a starter machine. I have no qualms about passing it down and having it be Catherine's and Avery's. Catherine says she wants to learn to use it, and I think that ( Read more... )

Dear lord.

That or a car. Damn. This is why I still use my mom's handmedown White.
On the plus side, the mechanics are all metal in it, so that's good.

That is good. It will probably last forever and almost anything that breaks can be fixed with WD40.
But that Janome can do top stitching in a high heel design.

My stepmom passed down a lower end Janome to me that was only $1100 new. Ten years ago.

I'm still scared to use it, because it's too expensive for a sewing machine. It's smarter than almost every other appliance in my house except the iPad.

That is really not too expensive for a good one.
I barely use a real computer at home anymore, so I'm thinking I could probably justify the cost of what I would have spent on that on a machine, so probably 2k or below.
You should get it serviced and use it! They are expensive because they work well, not because they're so nice to look at ;)

my MIL has some kind of crazy automated computerized husqvarna that was some ridiculous amount of money. she's a pretty avid quilter. I got her hand me down machine but I think I messed it up or something, lol.

Sometimes it's worth it to save up for the good stuff especially if you want to eventually sell stuff or eventually make all your own clothing. Higher quality stuff lasts for a long time and worth the eventual investment. My mom has one, she also has a serger that costed a ridiculous amount as well. I'm not allowed to touch them until she is dead or that is what she says anyways.

I know the better machines get pricey, and I'm kind of prepared to pay a lot more for my next one. Just not *that* much more. Maybe one day...
