[ CHARACTER INFORMATION ]

Name: Sakuya Haibara
Age: Unknown, but considering her younger brother is 27, I'm guessing somewhere around 32?
Gender: Female
Fandom: Fatal Frame IV: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse
Timeline: Taken pre-game, right before they perform the Kiraigou in the underground hall.
History: Fatal Frame 4 and character page

Character Personality: Most of Sakuya's life before she had fallen ill had been spent trying to take care of her father and brother after her mother had killed herself. She knew that her family was a bit messed up, way more so than others, with her father and his obsession with Gestuyuu Syndrome, and her brother following in those footsteps; studying every aspect of the disease and looking for a cure. She spent a lot of time around the hospital on the island, and even though she knew what her father was doing with his patients, the experiments and lobotomies and really nasty stuff, she really tried to not let it affect her. Instead, as they were all she had, she continued having more of a selective opinions on her family. In a way, she hoped that the tests and experiments that her father and brother did on the other patients there would eventually help them find a cure for the illness.

Sakuya loves her family and wouldn't let anything destroy her memories of them or her feelings towards them. After her mother died she grew into the maternal caregiver of the unit. She was the one who made sure everything at home was pretty well taken care of since her father was always at work. She made sure that there was always a meal ready three times a day and that all the cleaning and other household chores had gotten done. She stayed in this role through most of her life until falling ill, though some aspects of it did change throughout the years- turning from a mother for You, into something more of a wife and, well, everything that entailed. It all felt like a very normal progression for Sakuya to follow, never wanting to lose her family and being left alone.

The relationship she develops with her brother is- interesting, in that it is completely messed up. She became very close with him since they spent a lot of time together, and as their father became more and more obsessed with everything going on at the hospital- well, they got really close, and then there was Ayako, and it's all very incestuous and creepy. But this all just spurned her further into her mothering ways, wanting to take care of her daughter and raise her with kindness and gentleness. She wanted her daughter to grow up knowing that she was loved and all that fuzzy warm stuff that Sakuya never received after her mother's death. Unfortunately, that did not get the chance to happen. One aspect of the disease was that it was highly contagious, and as Sakuya and her family all but lived around infected patients all the time, she herself developed Getsuyuu Syndrome. Quarantined because of her family status, she was not allowed to take care of her daughter. Instead, Ayako was mostly then taken care of by her brother, You, and eventually started developing symptoms herself

A lot of Sakuya's personality changed over time as her illness got worse. Because the symptoms of the Gestuyuu Syndrome affect a person's mind so much it affects how they act and how they perceive themselves and others. Her mood becomes highly dependent on the moon's phase- becoming calm and lucid and has a lot more good days as the moon waxes, whereas her memories begin to fade in and out and her attitude becomes a lot more distraught and she begins to act more unstable and violent as the moon wanes. The illness affects all aspects of her life, not just her moods and actions, but also the bonds that she has with others.

Because of the illness, Sakuya never gets to create the bond she wanted with her daughter, and she begins to lose the bond she has with her brother as he becomes more obsessed with finding a cure for the Gestuyuu Syndrome. She then she gets locked away in a private ward on the fourth floor of the hospital, her only companions being the nurse that's watching over her and the dolls that she has collected. The dolls, though, do become a bit of her own obsession, which was not all surprising being part of her illness- that she puts "part of herself" in the doll, so that part of herself would not change and hopefully retain her memories. It does help, as when she's with the dolls, particularly the doll she name after herself, she's a lot more calm and a lot more in her right mind.

As she's largely left alone on the fourth floor, with her dolls and the nurse that hardly ever leaves the nurses station down the hall from Sakuya's room, and the occasional visit from her father and brother, she has no real contact with other people. This all changes, though, when a girl named Misaki manages to get on the fourth floor and into Sakuya's ward. Misaki is the first real bond that Sakuya makes after losing her other connections, and it helps greatly with her illness. Being around Misaki helps her become a bit more lucid and she became very close to the girl, finally getting the chance to take care and watch out for someone again, even going so far as to give Misaki her Sakuya doll, changing the name to Miya- a combination of Misaki and Sakuya. However, this also gets taken away from Sakuya, as Misaki witnesses one of Sakuya's worse moments and the nurses keep the girl away from the fourth floor after that.

It's then Sakuya starts to decline, becoming a lot more afraid of her reflection and covering her mirrors, clinging to her dolls a bit more, wanting more and more to leave her room and see the moonlight or find Ayako and You. Even though her illness is pretty far along, she still has quite a few lucid moments and surprisingly still has most of her memories, something that allows her personality surface when she does become more aware and clear-headed. She hates what the illness does to her, but she would never follow in her mother's footsteps in committing suicide, and instead places nearly all of her hope in her father and brother finding a cure for the Syndrome. Maybe then, they could all be a family again.

Character Abilities: Sakuya primarily just has the one supernatural ability of having a Sixth Sense. The Sixth Sense can manifest in several different ways, and Sakuya has most of them. She's able to sense the feelings left over in certain places, whether they be good or bad, helping her to know whether or not she should even be in that place. Other forms of her Sixth Sense allow her to feel and sometimes see the presence of ghosts and spirits, as well as being a bit more susceptible to the more vengeful ghosts. The other thing her Sixth Sense allows her to do is sense others around her with the same ability.

Character Weaknesses: Pretty much all of Sakuya's weaknesses stem from her illness, the Gestuyuu Syndrome. There's really no medication or anything that she can take for it, and there's no medical treatment that she's been receiving because there hasn't really been any treatments known for curing the disease. The disease causes her to be rather reliant on the moon's phases, becoming increasingly distressed as the moon wanes, and more calm when it waxes. The disease also causes her to sleepwalk at night as well as cause her to try and seek out moonlight. Other symptoms that she experiences is a fear of her own reflection as well as some memory impairment, mostly concerning her mother. She obsesses over some of her dolls, believing that she has stored part of her identity inside of them, patients with Gestuyuu Syndrome do this so that at least part of themselves never change.

The Syndrome even goes so far as to affect her relations with others in that because of how far gone her illness is, she has become a not so good influence on others. The nurse that had been given responsibility of taking care of her when she was moved to her own ward on the fourth floor of the hospital was so affected by Sakuya and her illness that she had taken her own life in front of her. Sakuya is especially affected by other who possess a Sixth Sense. When she is with the other person, the symptoms of her illness lessen, and when separated after she becomes attached to them, they worsen.

[ SOUL CAMPAIGN SECTION ]

What are the abilities that your character will retain in Soul Campaign? I was hoping that she would be able to keep her Sixth Sense in how it relates to her illness, but not actually having her Sixth Sense. It would simply be that she attracts, and would be attracted to, other who have/had a similar ability, and while being around them her symptoms would lessen, though once she gets attached to someone with a Sixth Sense, her symptoms would worsen when they were apart for extended periods of time. This would be used as just the psychological effects of her illness.

What are the weaknesses that your character will lose or gain in Soul Campaign? Her illness would not be as severe in Soul Campaign, since the moon never shifts into a New or Full phase, which is what causes a lot of the fluctuations in the severity of her symptoms, so she would actually stabilize over time, with less mood swings and a bit less sleepwalking.

[ WEAPON ONLY SECTION ]

Why your character should be a Weapon: Sakuya's never been much of an independent person, always following after the rest of her family. She had always wanted to follow in the footsteps of her mother: having her own family and taking care of them. After he mother killed herself, she started becoming very reliant on her brother, but with everything going on with her illness, Sakuya's not a very good person to be controlling someone else, for any reason. Her personality is one that would rather follow someone else's lead.

What is your character's Weapon form?: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse

A Mask that when worn causes the Meister to be able to use Status Attacks and increases the natural abilities of the Meister, or to simply just throw the mask as a physical attack.

FEAR; As long as the mask is worn, fear is instilled in others, the amount of fear depending on how much resonance there is between the Meister and Weapon. This ability may only work on those of equal or lesser strength. The range on this ability at first will only be roughly 5 ft, the range growing as the resonance grows between the Meister and Weapon.

PARALYSIS; Enabling this attack causes the eyes of the mask to glow, and once eye contact is made with the opponent, they become paralyzed, allowing the Meister to get in a few good shots. The length of time for the paralysis starts off fairly small, about 30 seconds, though this length of time will increase with greater resonance. Eye contact will need to be maintained throughout the attack.

BLOOMING; The mask itself "blooms", in that the mask becomes blurred and distorted, causing the strength of the Meister to increase as well as increasing the power of the other abilities. This ability is difficult to achieve at first, and will only last about a minute. As the resonation between Meister and Weapon increases, so is the likelihood of this attack occurring as well as the length of duration. This ability takes a lot of energy to maintain and the Meister will likely be very weakened after it wears off.

First Person:

[The camera focuses on Sakuya, though her face is obscured, hidden behind the mask she wears. Her head is titled, looking up at something out of frame, and as if she's listening to something that cannot be heard in the video. Her voice is muffled behind the mask when she speaks.]

It's different here. This is not Rougestu.

You? Are you here?

[She turns her face towards the communicator now, her eyes just visible behind the mask, looking directly into the camera before the feed cuts off.]

Third Person:
She stood in the center of the room as he moved around her, making sure everything was ready, that everything was perfect. He was the one who found the kimono, hidden in the back of their mother's closet, he aired it out, wrapped the silk around her, pulling to folds over and tying the obi around her waist. You was the one who brushed her hair out, placing the ornaments in her hair. Sakuya stood still as he continued getting her ready for the Kiraigou, her head turned to the window at the top of the room, staring at the moonlight that filtered in.

You was the one who turned her face to his and secured the Mask of the Lunar Eclipse in place.

She closed her eyes behind the mask, feeling the wood against her skin, feeling the power of the mask slide throughout her. Sakuya sighed softly behind the mask as she let all the tension leave her body, as she felt her brother hug her tightly before stepping back, felt the moonlight flowing over her from the tunnel above her. Sakuya stepped forward, out of the moonlight, to go into the Underground Hall, where she was to perform the ritual. It was only a slight shift that she felt, all the way through her body, that all of a sudden the moon had changed.

Her eyes opened, and she was no longer underground, no longer in front or even near her brother, and there was no longer an opening in the ceiling to show her the moon's brightness. She tilted her head to look at the screen in front of her, watching the images, but not really registering them.

She wanted the moon back.
