Pavements
The cool morning air was burning her lungs as her feet continued to pound on the pavement. For a brief moment she realized why moving, running was such a thrill for Wally. It hurt, but there was a challenge to it. An entirely different world of thinking and seeing that occurred even at a light jogging pace.
“Come on slow poke! Don’t tell me you’re getting tired already! I could probably lap you fifty times before you even reach the fifth mile!” the red head boasted ahead.
His cheeks were warm with exhilaration, and the grin that was plastered on his face made her heart ache. It had been at least five months since they agreed to leave the team, and four months since she agreed to do an early morning jog together every day.
“I don’t think that would be a smart idea considering you are currently walking the dog you moron,” she shot back.
He turned around, red hair flying forward as he began jogging backwards, “Oh, babe, moron only sounds endearing and lovely when it’s coming from those lips.”
The leash was wrapped around his hand twice, but it still hung very loosely above the ground. Nelson pranced forward, tongue hanging out as the sunlight highlighted his light grey coat. The two of them continued at each other’s pace with no cares in the world. And she wondered if he missed it at all. The rush of wind, the blur of colors, the world he decided to put behind him. He must because there were times when she would catch him speeding a little too fast on the track, and the slightest bout of excitement always had him buzzing throughout the apartment looking for her so he could relay his latest triumph.
“Just pay attention! Nelson maybe cooperating now, but the sight of one cat might have him dragging you across the floor again like last week,” she reminded him.
Her breathing sounded labored, but she wasn’t tired in the least. She hadn’t even broken a sweat, but the rushed breathing needed for her legs not to cramp up was leaving her throat dry, and she felt the need to slow down. The breeze tousled her hair from side to side now, and with a few more steps she came to a stop. She really missed his world. The sensation of her body cradled so gently against his chest as he took her along at his fastest speed. She would always try and keep her eyes open as long as possible before the dryness of the rushing wind forced them shut. Each time it was different, and she paid as much attention in order to remember each event as vividly as the last.
The pounding of his feet took her back to where she was. It was their slower world.
“Babe, you okay?” he said as if he hadn’t been running at all, “You just kind of stopped. You know that’s not good for you. You need to slow to a stop, never just stop. Easiest way to get an injury.”
Artemis offered him a smile as his hand found hers. Their fingers entwined so easily that it scared her sometimes. How did it get so easy to be with him? Maybe being with him was a different world all together and just being a part of the rush and thrill of it all dulled the aching. The look in his eyes was always so telling and certain when they originally left and they remained as endless and promising as they had since. She was okay with it. Everything would be okay.
“I’m fine. Just throat a little dry. I feel better now.”
“Yeah, right. The Wall-man knows when Miss Thing is feeling defeat. You can’t out run me you know,” he insinuated with the placement of his leash wrapped hand on his hip, “Can’t fool me.”
“I know, but there are so many more important things that I am better than you at,” she replied with a cocked brow and upturned lip.
The red color on his cheeks appeared more prominent than before, a lazy goofy grin now plastered to his face, “Um, care to demonstrate?”
She turned her body carefully to face him, and stepped forward capturing his lips with hers. He answered back with as much desire, both their senses awakened. It was warmer now, the sun touching their faces as she felt his arms sneak around her waist. She could still taste the hint of maple syrup hanging off of his lips, the same sweetness she always associated with him in the morning. They slowly pulled apart, a smirk still noticeable on her features.
“Maybe it would be better to demonstrate back at the apartment…you know…after you’re done chasing after Nelson.”
Confusion read on his face before he looked down at his hands. The leash he had secured around his hand was gone and there was a light trail of dust kicking up in the wind. His eyes looked off into the distance as panic registered at the sight of the dog running after a squirrel. Without any further indications he was off running. His legs pressing so surely into the pavement as he trailed after their dog.
“DAMN IT NELSON! GET BACK HERE YOU STUPID DOG! YOU SURE KNOW HOW TO RUIN A MOMENT!”
She smiled at their fading figures. Even if their lives weren’t on the line, the sight of him running so willingly and with such force always made her feel as if they were still young, still impressionable, and so free.
