My ankles hurt, I'm tired, I'm hungry and there are only corn flakes and frozen green beans in the house, my apartment is freezing, I miss my cats, and I have to work at nine a.m. on New Year's Day. On the other hand, my paychecks are finally plump enough to allow the purchase of purely frivolous items like coordinating bath towels and adorable shower curtain rings for my guest bathroom (el bano blanco y negro, i.e. the "pretty" bathroom), the expensive peppermint soap that doesn't dry my hands into cracked red claws, furry snow boots made out of Teddy Ruxpin hide, and a fancy hair dryer with a diffuser so my curls don't degenerate to frizz if I'm running late in the mornings. Go real job!

I walked home in the snow last night wearing my new boots. Someone made a snowman with a broccoli hat and grape eyes on the sidewalk in front of work. The neighbor kids had a twilight snowball fight, and instead of being irritated like I usually am when children are doing anything other than being not seen and not heard, I thought of how brimming with awesome a twilight snowball fight is when you're ages four and up. Lance thought I was dead in a frozen ditch because I forgot to call when I got home, and he drove over to make sure I was okay. I adore that man.

Then we woke up this morning and the snow's magic spell was melting into the soggy grass.
