Disturbed from my sleep by a random drunken phone call, I decided to update this thing . . .
So, I just found out today that the building that burned down in the South Loop (on Wabash Ave) Tuesday afternoon was an Adler & Sullivan building (The Dexter Building, c. 1887). This is Sullivan's 150th birthday, and so far two of his buildings have burned down this past year! I'm so sad, and he's my favorite Chicago architect too (shhh . . . mustn't let anyone at the FLW Preservation Trust find out, or I'll be canned)! Holabird, Roche, and Burnham are pretty awesome too, but I'd like to think that Sullivan is more of a Chicago icon. Besides, he's known as the father of modern architecture (and his roofs don't leak either, like someone else's roofs).
