She was elected governor in 2006. She was previously the mayor of Wasilla, this town up in the valley near Anchorage (population like 8,000). Oh, and formerly, she was a beauty queen! I just have to throw that in there, because when I think of beauty queens turned politicians, I think of that chick last year who answered that question about maps and Iraq and all that.

Anyway, her platform was ethics reform for the state. That was a big problem at the time, as I'm sure you've heard, we've now had all sorts of state legislators indicted/convicted of accepting bribes, and now our US senator (the longest serving in history) has been indicted for the same.

So this was her platform. She wants ethical people in state government and transparency, blahblabh. In addition, there has constantly been an effort to move the state capital out of Juneau up to the valley (where she's from). In one of her campaign speeches, she said, "I'm going to Juneau for you, the Valley!" So obviously she came here with an agenda.

Since she's been here, she's moved many of the state commissioner and director jobs up north, and when she makes appointments she allows people to choose if they want to work in Anchorage or Juneau. Besides that, she's never IN Juneau. She doesn't really live here, and mostly works from Wasilla.

Her most recent scandal involves firing her public safety commissioner. He is a highly respected man and was taken from his position as the Chief of Anchorage PD and appointed as public safety commissioner. In July, she fired him. She said basically he serves at her will, and she was done with him, so he was gone. Then the truth came out, and it seems that he refused to fire her former brother-in-law, who was involved in a messy custody dispute with Palin's SISTER. When he refused, she fired him. Then she appointed this cluster fuck of a police chief from Kenai who ended up resigning like two weeks later because it came out that he was previously punished for sexual harassment at his job!

All along she's said the firing of Monegan (PS Commissioner) had nothing to do with her sister, and she *never* asked him to fire the brother-in-law. About two days later, recordings come out where her chief of staff (I think it was) was talking to a Lt. at the troopers asking for the brother-in-law to be fired. I think there were around two dozen calls. She claims to have known nothing about it, and that he was never told or authorized to make these calls, blahbalh. And after all this, she puts this guy on PAID administrative leave, when at that point, she clearly should have fired him! It's also been alleged that her husband, Todd, whom she affectionately refers to as "the first dude" was behind a lot of the phone calls to the troopers to get this guy fired. He apparently meddles in a lot of the governorly goings on.

So anyway, that's pretty much the scoop. There are lots of other things that have happened that I don't agree with. I basically just think she's a dishonest person.

That, and she named her son Trig Van Palin, because they thought it sounded "funny," like Van Halen. Her son has Downs. I'm sure there are going to be plenty of other things in his life for people to make fun of him besides a name like that. (But this part has nothing to do with the political side of it.)
