Homophobe rant

Words like these -- What gets on my nerves is when gays think they're going to heaven. It specifically says in the bible that they're not. -- clearly show what an ignorant, judgmental person this girl is.

She posted this on a SLASH forum. I'm wondering why she was even doing on a SLASH (read little girl: gay, gay, gay) forum in the first place. I' ( Read more... )

I won't get into a theology debate here, as I don't think that's the point, but I'd just like to contribute that I come from pretty much the same background as you (Except that I'm straight) and I came to the same conclusion. First, the Bible says anything and everything, and everybody just conveniently keeps what does it for them and ignores the rest (I've tried to live by "Don't judge lest you be judged" and "Love one another as I have loved you"; the "slavery's right", "sodomites will burn in hell" and "If a cow falls in a pit that belongs to you, you basically owe its owner, like, a cow"... not so much.)I think people should not try to use the Book as a guideline for this reason. If you believe in an almighty, loving, perfect god, and if you think worshiping him means striving to do the right thing during your stay on earth, then you should ask yourself what's moral, what's the right thing, what's harmful to others and what's not, just as Calldyr said. Basically, you need to try to think. If you need to look it up in a list or a text before you can tell the difference between what's right and what's wrong, you're probably not on the right path.
I had my own reasons to quit organized religion, but ever since I was a child this was how I practiced, and I guess I was a lot less conflicted in this respect then fundamentalist freaks who give religions a bad name.
Anyway, I didn't mean to rant, but there's so much gay bashing going around that it's probably alright if the non homophobes sometimes get together to state the obvious and remind everybody that judgmental reactionaries might be the loudest, but they're certainly not the majority, and they don't get to be the only ones who speak for believers, religion, humanity or just the Internet.
