so, Im back.
I would have stayed in Thailand for another month. at least. I really liked it there. It was so beautiful!
There are children with no identity there, no names even....
Burmese refugees. Whats going on in Burma that there would be refugees, you might ask? The western powers arent telling you because there is nothing of value that we could gain by helping the Burmese people who are being exterminated by their own government.
A civil war is going on in Burma between gurilla(sp?) fighters nd the government. The government has decided that the way to solve this is to kill all the townspeople who are suspected of giving shelter to the fighters. Innocent people are being murdered and hardly anyone knows about it.
I met a boy who didnt have a sure age, we think he is five, but we are not sure. He didnt have a name when Jim found him in the refugee camps. No mother, father, or anyone taking care of him.
He finally was named when Jim took charge of him and took him from the camps. His name is Mao-Mao. (pronounced Mow-Mow).
He is burmese, he looks burmese and he sounds burmese, but he refuses to speak it and he claims in his little five year old way that he is Thai. He will not play with children who are burmese. He has a hatred of his own people because of the environment he was brought up in. Act more Thai = get treated better.
I hate both of the governments. The Burmese governemtn is violent and cruel and the THai government is not even recognizing the refugees as people, giving them no rights, not even as displaced persons.
Another girl, her name pronounced A-ow, I dont know how to spell it, who is thirteen and was raised in a brothel by her mother who was a sex worker and had HIV/AIDS and TB. The mother kidnapped her after signing her care over the Jim and took her into Burma where Jim could not get her back from, and her mother sold her into slavery to a cow farmer, for 500 Baht, which is about 14 dollars. Jim got her out of there, along with her cousin who was also there, Musa. A-ow's mother refused medical treatment and went back to work. She died about three weeks ago, Jim traveling back and forth across the border every day because A-ow still wanted to be with her mother as she died. A-ow is one of the most beautiful girls Ive ever seen, both physically and emotionally and spiritually.
Boon-Phen is a sixteen year old mother. Her baby is a year and a half old, and is the product of a rape. Boon-Phen has fetal alcohol syndrome, and has a terrible memory, and cannot remember all the steps for taking care of her baby, Boo-Pa(sp?). I spent the night in the hospital with Boo-Pa and Mike, because Jim needed sleep so badly, and Boo-Pa was really sick and needed to be on IV and stay over night at the hospital. We were in the same ward with people with AIDS and non contagious TB and paralysis. It was one of the most incredably sad experiences of my life. I was so happy I could be there for Boo-Pa, his mother was with a Buddhist nun with the other girls, A-ow and Musa, for a few days of meditation.
thats all I can really type right now, feeling a little drained.
