Spitting out a large mouthful of blood he carried on, the bubbling hissing from his side ignored. Demons played dirty and the wound burned like acid, eating away at his flesh and bone. Leaning against a thick tree trunk he gasped for breath, blood splattering the earthy ground beneath his bare feet, his vision swam and despite the sturdy assistance of the tree, he swayed before falling unconscious.

When he awoke he was no longer in the forest, the brown cabin roof over his head told him as much, his senses filled in the rest of the blanks. He was in a small village in the midst of the forest, there was water not far off, within walking distance, it was reassuring.

Sitting up he howled, blinding pain laced up and down his side, it was unlike any other he had ever experienced. There were bodies rushing in speaking in a language he did not recognize, they spoke to him, he assumed they did not want him to move and he couldn’t have agreed more.

He must have blacked out again because when he woke next there were birds chirping outside. He did not dare moving this time, although something felt different now. There was an air of calm, peace and happiness. He had a great sense of joy and that everything would be alright.

“You are awake,” came a soft feminine voice from nearby. He must have picked up on the language finally.

“Yes,” he breathed out in a smooth and sultry voice, thankful that there was no pain. Slowly he pushed himself into a sitting position and realized that there was no pain at all. Checking himself over with careful motions.

“You are better,” the voice said again and he turned to regard her with a calm curiosity, he hadn’t met any creature other than his own kind and demons. She was a young female, a cub his mind provided, a pale blue lioness with a messy head of dark purple hair and large curious green eyes. She was smiling up at him but her eyes spoke of awe and wonder, like he she had never met a creature outside her own race and rivalling tribes.

“I am,” he replied with a soft charming grin as he pulled her onto his lap “are you my keeper?” he inquired running a pale hand over her head making her purr.

“Yes!” she exclaimed excitedly with a nod, “I am to watch you until you are all better.”

He couldn’t help but smile at her excitement “than you have done a wonderful job little one. Thank you.” Carefully he set her down and stood.

“Awww you’re leaving?” she asked surprising him with her insight.

“Yes,” he said pausing a moment.

“Will I see you again?” she asked.

“I’m not sure,” he replied seeing no reason to lie to this being.

“I’ll miss you.” She said hugging him suddenly.

Returning the embrace, he plucked a feather from his wings, unseen by mortal eyes and handed it to her “you don’t need to.” He said softly and with a final hug left.
