Weekly Whinge 20 Jan 2008

I'm feeling fat and sassy! Another week comes to an end. I'm pretty sure this one was more database work. Thankfully, I think I have most of it finished - I can add and edit groups and volunteers, and all that I really need to do, I think, is add a stats-generation page and clean up what I have. Then the massive backlog of data entry begins. We had a small group this week, older folks, and they fed me. Yum. No volunteers at all this week.

I'm in a bit of a bind over my work schedule. I've tried working Sunday - Thursday in the past (at my boss's suggestion), but this prevents me from seeing parades, and everyone (incl. my boss) always forgets that I don't work Fridays and so call me up and give me work to do when I'm sleeping in or lounging about in my pajamas. I want to move back to a more traditional Mon-Fri schedule, though the catch is that I need to be here to greet groups when they arrive, which is typically Sunday (hence the Sun-Thu work week). Of course, groups are just as likely to come Saturday or Monday, so I'd rather have Sunday off, with the condition that I'll stay here in case a group arrives, and just donate my free time to showing them around the place. We'll see how that works out, I suppose.

On the non-work front, my laptop's hard drive failed, or started to, so I bought a new one. I was able to extract a lot of the important data from the old one, and I'll keep it around in case I remember something I didn't recover. It's a bit like starting over with a new computer, since my color schemes are a bit different, and I haven't quite reinstalled all the same software I used to have. The new 80 GB hard drive is a lot roomier than the old 20 GB one, so it's nice to have the extra space (not that I need it). Moral of the story: back up your hard drives! Especially if it's 3+ years old. Hard drive crashes can happen to you!

Went to the Mystik Krewe of Perseus parade in Slidell today. That was a lot of fun. The floats are themed after major holidays, so a whole year passes before one's eyes. I got some beads, a small frisbee, and a cup. I also got an easter egg from the easter float, inside which I found... more beads! I don't know if I wasn't shouting, "Mister! Mister!" loud enough, or if I'm not cure enough, or not aggressive enough in assaulting the floats, but I didn't get a lot of beads compared to the people standing around me. Also, you would not believe how many dance studios / clubs / groups there are in Slidell. I'm pretty sure that every female resident of Slidell age 6-18 marched in either a band or a dance team in this parade.

My girlfriend says to mention that she got a new piercing. Hint: it's below her chin and above her navel. My girlfriend: more exciting than I am.
