Musings....

Have been thinking about SAW in deeper respects lately, and although not obvious at first glance, it has a very positive message. In amongst all these things that people have to fear thrown at us day after day after day, it's kind of refreshing to have a moral that is: "Live your life to the full, the best way you can."

Alright, it's a message rammed down your throat with hugely gory scenes and blokes with scary voices leaving messages for the main characters, but the fact that it's trying to promote being healthy and happy to just be alive is quite nice. I mean, what's the point in worrying? If someone wants us to be blown up, what can we do about it?

That's not the point anyways. There is no threat to our society in Britain other than those that are stirred up by the media. If there are to be any killings, racially motivated attacks, etc.. It will be because the media is being taken far too litterally by some people. I mean come on, if there was really that great a threat of September 11th style terrorism, do you think that those fox hunt demonstrators would have got anywhere near the doors to the houses of parliament? Surely Tony Blair means more to the corporate bean machine than that?!

Gah, it's all bollocks.

I had to laugh, there was a copy of the sun that I managed to have a sneaky giggle at in the staff room at work today, and it was a story about that Huntley fella, you know, that kiddy-killer? Well apparently he's been making VooDoo dolls in his cell, and so practicing 'black magic'. Now, I don't know that much about VooDoo, but I would have thought that to practice it effectively you would need materials unavailable to someone in prison, and would take a huge effort and concentration and knowledge of the craft to produce any kind of black magic. Now the Sun's coverage of this? Well, they did a whole double page spread on the subject, with words like "EVIL" and "DESPICABLE" all over it. From this I concluded that the Sun's office must have been saving those coupons for free books and bought themselves a theasaurus, because there were about seven words that all meant the same thing...BAD.

Then, in the bottom right hand corner, there was the smallest little box you could imagine actually explaining the theories of VooDoo, and by explaining I actually mean they were referring to it constantly as "Black Magic".

Let's look at this in the sense I was looking at SAW earlier...
SAW=Horribly gory, unimaginably disturbing, nasty unpleasant film.
THE MESSAGE= Live each day like there's no tomorrow, be the best that you can, because life is short.

THE SUN= Poorly worded story about the killer of two innocent young girls practicing some mystical foreign EVIL religion.
THE MESSAGE= Cultures alien to the majority in Britain are as evil as Ian Huntley (The equivalent to the bad guy with the huge twisty moustache in pantomimes.)

DON'T get me wrong, I by absolutely NO means condone what he did, I do think that he deserves all that he gets in prison for what he's done, and I would believe that, whether the media said it or not. I simply hate the tabloid press, their crappy propaganda and the fact that whether you killed two kids, missed a penalty in a big and important football match, or put on a few pounds and got saggy boobs, you will be treated with the same amount of contempt, and held up as examples of social enemies to avoid and alienate completely.

Was there any coverage in this issue of the Sun of the female aid worker that was kidnapped in Iraq? Probably, but the editors clearly thought that some blondes breasts and the VooDoo thing (probably not even true) were more important for us to know about. Now I know that to you reading this it seems like I'm just preaching to the converted, but I became a bit worried when someone read over my shoulder in the staff room and struck up a conversation about how awful this VooDoo stuff is.. She'd taken everything in.

Fuck worrying about mobile phones giving us cancer, this shit is far more contagious.
