I've been doing a lot of reading over the last week or so. I'm especially getting into two things: metacognition and AD&D.
In terms of metacognition, and the research indicating that many
aspects of metacognition appear to be implicit rather than explicit, I
was reading a quote last night that really struck me:

I think I need to sit down for a moment now....that came without any kind of drugs or sleep deprivation, and it's making my head spin a bit.
I've wondered about the potential therapeutic benefits of using RPGs with people. I'd think it would be a form of play therapy, but a very specialized one. Part of the difficulty would be having a very well-trained Game Master/Therapist for it, and potentially having some good confederates in the group, at least until a good set of norms could get established. It would also end up being the kind of thing that I would think should get done in conjunction with other therapy and longer-term forms of intervention to address all of the issues raised and allow time for the process to both develop and work.
But it could be away for someone to work through some kinds of issues, especially social anxieties. After all, it's not them actually doing or saying those things....it's just some made-up person.
It'd also depend on the game being run, as that'd probably have to be matched by diagnosis. Paranoia would actually probably do quite well with paranoid people. The Amber RPG would probably do better with the introverted/socially anxious types. Toon would be great for Axis II OCD. Y'know, this could be an interesting paper to write up for some lucky student...

If I ever decide to do something with RPG therapy, I'll be calling you. Those are some great ideas and observations! In the meantime, we'll just have to experiment among friends. ;)

As for the RPG stuff, I'd be interested if you do decide to do something with it. And, 'til then, gaming with friends sounds good to me! If nothing else, it's kind of like a roleplay in a skills class...it gives you the chance to practice some stuff and test out some ideas in a safe envirionment.
