So...
No stairs, no sparring, no magic, no bending, no knives, no shutting doors or going around corners without looking carefully, no heavy objects, no sitting near windows, no sewing, no gardening with a trowel, no surprising the cat, no climbing trees, no trying to fix anything mechanical...
... and no alchemy.

I can help with preserving things, if you still need it. It's, um, really cold all the time where I'm from, so I'm pretty good at packing and rationing food.

Have you been settling in well?

I -- guess so, yeah. As well as can be expected, I guess. [She pauses, fidgets.] Toph and I are looking for a place to live. But if there's any way I can be useful, please, let me know.

If you could catch rabbits and go about smoking and preserving the meat, that would be a huge help; or even if you could check around the stores and look for anything that might be useful.
As for a place to live... [Pause] Toph? I thought she was living with Zuko?

[She might have someone else do the actual killing of them, but it'd be easy enough for her to catch a few in some ice. Her face darkens a little at Zuko's name, but it is obvious that she is trying very hard to keep her voice neutral.]
Zuko and Toph and I are all from the same world. I never really.. got along with Zuko. I'd rather we didn't live with him, if possible.

Al's face sobers a bit, and the smile drops off. This is probably what Zuko meant by his past. It must be horrible, not having people trust him.]
If that's how you feel... um, I know of an apartment building over by the riverside... it's been abandoned for a long time, but I used to live there and it has running water, if not electricity.
It's still got some furniture and things.

She catches the way his expression changes and looks away from the PCD for a moment, arranging her face into a carefully neutral expression before looking back.]
Toph has some ideas, too. She doesn't want to go too far from Zuko if she can help it, but - I'd like to be close to the river if I can.

It probably shows in his face, though.]
Well, the apartments are at [x,y] if you'd like to go take a look.

.. thanks. And don't give me that look. I've got reasons to feel the way I do about Zuko, and reason enough to want to keep Toph away.

[Al bites his lip and sighs, sadly.]
I know, and it's not my place to get involved. Your choices are your choices, and I don't mean to cheapen what you've obviously been through by saying that, and I can't ask you to reconsider, not yet.
But Zuko's been a good friend to me. To a lot of people here. I have my own opinion about him, and he's given me very good reasons to have it.
[Al rolls his shoulders.]
I'm sorry for the look.

Instead, she just gives a tiny nod, swallowing a little thickly.]
I understand. It's only natural to try to protect the people you care about. And thanks for the tip about the coordinates. I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually.

... and he's dealt with those sorts of people, Katara. He's loved someone like that. It's not an easy thing. He wishes he could talk to her, to explain it, but not now. Now... is not the time for it. Best to let her settled in. Things will come on their own time. He's learned not to meddle.]
Yeah... thank you, for understanding. I know how hard it is on the nerves when you first get here.

She fidgets after a moment, then smiles at him.]
I'm going to go try to catch some rabbits. I'll bring you whatever I get, alright?
Reply
He smiles back.]
Okay. If you catch any, just bring them right to the clinic, I can start on them.
