While most people couldn’t say so, he liked rules. As newly appointed Turk, bodyguard to Rufus ShinRa, he had to follow them. Said kid was toddling around his room, looking for something. He would ask to help, but something told him he wouldn’t be winning any favours by doing that. The blond was stubborn, even at his young age. Finally, there was a triumphant cry from the other room over. Then, there were a few moments of silence. Tseng slumped back against the chair he was sitting in. It had been a trying month. Going against your family’s wishes to work for the one company they absolutely hated was not for the faint-hearted. Although he stood by his decision, the betrayal written so plainly across their faces was a hard pill to swallow. His musings were interrupted by a small tap on his knee. Opening his eyes, he found Rufus standing there, looking expectantly up at him with a large leather-bound book clutched to his small chest. The boy bit his lip, before rushing out,
“Willyoureadmeastory?” Tseng knitted his eyebrows in confusion.
“I’m sorry? What was that?” The answer was just as quiet, although slower.
“Will you read me a story?” Seeing hesitation on Tseng’s face, he pouted. “It’s just...mommy used to read them to me all the time. But, daddy said she had to go away for a while.” The older male frowned; he didn’t have the heart to tell this kid that his “mommy” was dead. “I can read them myself, but it’s always better to have them read to you.
“I would like to sir,” Rufus flinched at that word. “But...I am not too good at reading stories.” Instead looking disappointed, Rufus’s eyes lit up.
“Then I can read you the story!” He squealed happily. He flipped open the book. Tseng caught brief glimpses of colourful pictures and sprawling calligraphy. Rufus starting to tell a story of a princess who wanted love, a frog who turned out to be a prince, and the kiss the united them together. He did all the different voices, eyes shining brightly with happiness. Tseng himself smiled, the boy always seemed so shy. But when he immersed himself in this world of fantasy, it was like a different person came forth. But, the spell ended as soon as the words “The End” were uttered. Rufus shut the book and sighed. “I wish I could find a prince one day.”
“Don’t you mean a princess?” The scowl that followed was pleasantly surprising. It meant that the blond was getting more comfortable with him.
“No, I want a prince.” Tseng held out his hands, laughing a bit.
“Alright, Alright.” He stood, offering his hand to Rufus. Pulling the boy up, he dropped a kiss on Rufus’s hand. The blush that grew on his pale cheeks was positively adorable. “But, sometimes to find a prince, you have to kiss every frog in the kingdom. And even then, the answer might be right under your nose.”
