Trivium frontman Matt Heafy is a powerhouse of creativity energy. Along with kicking ass in Trivium for over two decades, Heafy has always been one to pursue new creative opportunities. Recently, the guitarist/vocalist just teamed up with vocalist/keyboardist Jonathan Young for a Magic The Gathering soundtrack.
If you are a fan of Heafy’s work, then you probably already know about his much-anticipated upcoming black metal project IBARAKI, featuring the likes of Ihsahn of Emperor fame. Well today, per the Trivium Instagram account, more details have been revealed about Heafy’s project - including a new song, the album’s title, an album cover, and some super talented guests!
The record’s official title is Rashomon. The new song, released today, is titled “Akumu” and features none other than Nergal of Behemoth. This is a ferocious sounding cut, which you can check out for yourself below:
Per the Trivium Instagram post, Heafy confirms the album’s release date, which is May 6th. He also discusses “Akumu” in further detail, sharing the following:
“‘Akumu’ translates to ‘nightmare’ - and with this piece, I encourage the listener to work to find their interpretations of what they feel from the lyrics, music, and the haunting visuals of the music video.
⠀
“I have always been fascinated by @Sagazan’s ‘Transfiguration,’ and for years, I have wanted to pay homage to his works with a performance art piece; to finally be able to immerse myself in his style was an intense experience.
⠀
“Having Nergal guest in this @ihsahnofficial co-written piece allowed me to combine many of my long-time influences; and when I presented with Nergal of the challenge of translating my lyrics into Polish, it brought the song to another level.”
The album will also feature Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance. That’s right folks, Gerard Way is going to be on a black metal album.
