I have recently succumbed to watching mini-marathons of Breaking Bad on the weekends. Just finished season 1 tonight in fact.
It's far darker and more twisted than I expected (even for a show revolving around drugs), and full of really fantastic writing and compelling characterization.
But how could I expect anything less out of Vince Gilligan? I mean, the guy wrote some of the best X-Files episodes...
"Unruhe"
"Paper Hearts"
"Memento Mori"
"Small Potatoes"
"Bad Blood"
"Dreamland"
"Tithonus"
"Field Trip"
"Hungry"
"Je Souhaite"
...which (go figure) also happened to be some of my favorite XF episodes ever. You can tell just from that selection of writing alone how well Gilligan can delve into subjects involving moral ambiguity, cancer, dark whimsical comedy, and the more sinister recesses of the human mind. I'm seeing all of that present in Breaking Bad thus far.
I've always liked Bryan Cranston too (well, since Malcolm In The Middle anyway). He's such a great actor. I never would have expected him to be able to pull off playing a character with such psychopathic tendencies... and this side of Walt is still emerging at this point. You just know its going to get even worse from here. D:
I'm also going to just go ahead and say... Walt and Jesse have amazing chemistry together (heh, chemistry). They're my ship on the show already. And I'm not even talking slash-wise either... It's just their odd couple-esque father-son / teacher-student / partners-in-crime emotional co-dependent attachment to each other and how fucked up it is. I love those kinds of complicated and unusual relationships.
Anyhoo. Breaking Bad = highly recommended.
I should have started watching this show much sooner. I feel like I missed out on so much awesome.
