Muse‘s Matt Bellamy has announced that he has scored a new audiobook of 1984 - starring Andrew Garfield.
George Orwell’s famed dystopian novel 1984 will be getting a new dramatization as an Audible original. The audiobook narration will be done by actors Garfield, Cynthia Ervio, Andrew Scott and Tom Hardy. It is set to be released on April 4 and is available for pre-order
here.
Bellamy took to his official X/Twitter page to tweet about the new dramatisation of the novel and shared that he and award-winning British composer, Ilan Henry Eshkeri created the audiobook’s original score.
“Original music score by myself and @ilaneshkeri and recorded with the one and only London Metropolitan Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios,” read his tweet.
This is not the first time Bellamy has mentioned has interacted with Orwell’s novel. Back in 2009, Muse cited the book as a major influence for the creating of their fifth album ‘The Resistance’.
Speaking to Radio 1’s Zane Lowe at the time (via BBC), Bellamy shared how he reread the book shortly before writing the band’s new material and said: “When I read it this time I was much more taken with the love story.”
He continued: “I read once in school about 15 years ago it was all about the politics. But when I read it this time I was much more taken with the love story in the book between Juliette and Winston.”
In 2017, Bellamy compared Trump’s America to Orwell’s 1984. At the time, he took to Twitter to write: “The end of US global hegemony begins. Authoritarianism/statism will now rise as democracy declines. Beware #1984 #unitedstatesofeurasia“. He also wrote in a separate tweet: “Orwell was out by 100 years. Here is the world in 2084.”
Elsewhere, last year the frontman smashed his guitar and gifted it to fan at Muse’s gig at The O2.
According to NME writer Ali Shutler, who was at the concert, Bellamy gifted the smashed guitar to a fan who was holding up a sign saying that they’d seen Muse live 225 times.

Andrew Garfield, Cynthia Erivo and Andrew Scott to Star in Audible Adaptation of ‘1984’
Andrew Garfield and Cynthia Erivo will lead Audible’s audio adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984.
The Amazing Spider-Man and Wicked stars will play Winston and Julia, respectively, alongside Fleabag’s Andrew Scott as O’Brien and Inception’s Tom Hardy as Big Brother. The audio adaptation will also feature an original score written by Muse front-man Matthew Bellamy and composer Ilan Eshkeri, which will be performed by a 60-piece orchestra at Abbey Road studio.
Destiny Ekaragha (The End of the F***ing World) directs the Audible Original adaptation, which is described as staying “faithful” to the original text, while drawing in more of Winston and Julia’s romantic relationship. The Orwell Estate has authorized and endorsed the adaptation.
The classic novel, published in 1949, is set in an imagined dystopian future in which Winston and his colleague, Julia, are dissatisfied with their totalitarian government and look to make a change. However, as they begin to plot, they learn that the government is always watching.
The audio drama will be released globally on April 4, which marks 40 years after the date of Winston’s first diary entry in 1984.
The cast also features Romesh Ranganathan as Parsons, Natasia Demetriou as Mrs Parsons, Chukwudi Iwuji as Charrington, Francesca Mills as Syme, Katie Leung as Ling, Alex Lawther as Ampleforth alongside a full ensemble.
The Audible Originals division has also struck development deals to create new works with authors such as James Patterson and stars such as Kerry Washington’s Simpson Street Productions, George Clooney’s Smokehouse Pictures and Issa Rae’s Raedio.
“This is 1984 like you’ve never heard it before. We’ve assembled a top team of creatives across the board, and the combination of the principal cast and Matt and Ilan’s epic soundtrack is something quite extraordinary. Andrew Garfield was born to play Winston - just wait until you hear his performance,” said Aurelie de Troyer, head of regional Content, Europe at Audible.

Andrew Garfield and Tom Hardy for all-new 1984 adaptation
Andrew Garfield and Tom Hardy are to play the iconic roles of Winston Smith and Big Brother in an audio adaptation of George Orwell's world-famous novel, 1984.
The dystopian tale is set in a nightmarish future, where a superstate named Oceania is held in the grip of a totalitarian leader, whose forces ensure freedom of thought and expression is harshly restricted.
The story unfolds from the perspective of Winston, the archetypal 'everyman', who begins to question the regime and - together with his colleague and lover, Julia (Cynthia Erivo) - seeks out a resistance group called The Brotherhood.
This latest adaptation also features celebrated Fleabag and All of Us Strangers star Andrew Scott as O'Brien, a mysterious figure who crosses paths with Winston and Julia on their journey.
This full cast for the audio drama also features Romesh Ranganathan as Parsons, Natasia Demetriou as Mrs Parsons, Chukwudi Iwuji as Charrington, Francesca Mills as Syme, Katie Leung as Ling and Alex Lawther as Ampleforth.
For Lawther, 1984 marks a reunion with director Destiny Ekaragha, who previously helmed episodes of Channel 4 comedy-drama The End of the F***ing World, which proved to be his breakout project.
Ekaragha said: "This is my first experience directing an audio drama, and what an honour it was to work so closely with a cast of this calibre. I can't wait for everyone to hear what the Andrews, Cynthia and Tom have done with these iconic characters."
1984 will be available to listen to on Audible from Thursday 4th April 2023, marking exactly 40 years since Winston's first diary entry in the classic novel. The title is available for pre-order now through Audible.
In addition to the high-profile actors, the production also features music from Muse frontman Matthew Bellamy and composer Ilan Eshkeri (Informer), who have crafted an original score performed by a 60-piece orchestra at Abbey Road studios.
The soundtrack includes two re-workings of Muse songs.
Aurelie de Troyer, Head of Regional Content, Europe at Audible, added: "This is 1984 like you've never heard it before.
"We've assembled a top team of creatives across the board, and the combination of the principal cast and Matt and Ilan's epic soundtrack is something quite extraordinary.
"Andrew Garfield was born to play Winston - just wait until you hear his performance."
