Well, I'm back! We arrived at 12:55 this morning. I think I have jet lag, but not too bad because I don't feel that out of it, just sort of tired in a way that reminds me of the early days of Folio week.
Long flights are weird things. It still feels like it was just one day - woke up in the Walrus in London, went into town, saw snow, watched Top Gear, went to airport, got on plane, 13 hours, Singapore Changi airport, got on plane, 5 hours, Perth airport.
Long-flight plane food is heaps better than short-flight plane food, by the way. We had chicken tika masala and er, Chicken... curry... and it was gooood.
Watched a fair few movies - Public Enemies, which was good but surprising at the end, Bruno, which was actually pretty terrible - doesn't have the "unscripted" feeling that Borat had, and I think it was a bit too crude... and District 9, my favourite of the bunch. Too tired/lazy to say much more than that.
Might be time for a midafternoon nap, soon.
Proper entry laterrrrz
Um, there are various typos in here. Too tired to fix. Appologies. My favourite is dispoportionately.
I can't remember if favourite is meant to have a 'u' in it, or if it's just LJ's spell checker being reta- I mean American English.
Oh man nap time.
1. What did you do in 2009 that you'd never done before?:
Travelled overseas, finished a degree!
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?:
Pretty much! And yes... next year I want to be more dedicated to my degree, and to my own fitness and wellbeing. I also want a puppy, but that will probably have to wait.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?: No...
4. Did anyone close to you die?: Not a person.
5. What countries did you visit?: *deep breath* France, Holland, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, Spain, Portugal, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Egypt,
6. What would you like to have in 2010 that you lacked in 2009?: Erm, pretty much nothing, maybe an iPhone. :P
7. What date from 2009 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?: The whole of the past 6.5 months, probably! But especially that day when we climbed along the Muren Loop in Lauterbrunnen in Switzerland, that morning in Scotland on the Isle of Lewis that we went to the Callanesh standing stones, being inside the Great Pyramid, the heat of the Acropolis in Athens... and less positively, getting a phonecall at 5am on Milos from my mum saying that Bonnie had died. :(
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?: Finishing my degree! Whoo!
Lots of other ones too though, like climbing several mountains, learning to use a map (no I'm serious, I can totes do Road Map now). Learning to haggle in Egypt...
9. What was your biggest failure?: Getting the LG Renoir. Errrrrrrr shitty phone
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?: Yep. I had food poisoning in Madrid, epic.
11. What was the best thing you bought?: I don't know! I brought a lot of things. Pretty pleased with the purchase of my Anubis jewellery box from Egypt, since I know that it costs about $300 in Australia and I paid 120LE (~#30AU). Also, um, my Jungfraujoch Swiss Army Knife. :)
12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?: Gavin took me on a >6 month trip around Europe and the UK and that was pretty awesome of him.
13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?: Nobody's behaviour made me depressed, but I can say that from my experience, Germans make pretty terrible Hostel Dorm roomies.
14. Where did most of your money go?: Into the European Union, the United Kingdom and the Arab Republic of Egypt!
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?: Going to Europe!
16. What song will always remind you of 2008?: I'm on a Boat and Santana DVX by The Lonely Island. We brought the CD while we were driving around the UK. And Shakira's She-Wolf, because it was on the radio a lot at the same time.
There's a She-Wolf in my pocket... Awoooooo
17. Compared to this time last year, are you happier or sadder?: Hell happier! But also more jet-lagged.
ii. Richer or poorer?: Incredibly, richer. (As in it's incredibile that I'm not poorer, not that I'm richer by an incredible amount.)
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?: Nothing? The answer to this may end up being driving, I haven't driven since before we left to start our trip, and that's probably not a great thing.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?: Nothing! It's a pretty just right year.
20. How did you spend Christmas?: Oh whups, haven't done it yet. But it will be with my family and Gavin's family, much like last year I'd expect. Except I will have more awesome presents to give to people!
22. Did you fall in love in 2008?: No, but I'm still in love
23. How many one-night stands?: None. I don't plan for this answer to ever change!
24. What was your favourite TV program?: Lol TV. I have watched hardly any. Howeveeeeer, there is an awesome UK show called the Gadget Show which I saw twice and liked, so that.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?:
Those German girls from my Madrid dorm room. GOD.
No, I don't really hate them. But if I had the chance I would go into their house and turn on all the lights and talk in a louder than normal voice and pack and unpack my bags really noisily while they're trying to sleep at 3am if I had the chance. And then when they woke up and kindly asked me to please shut the fuck up I'd say "Don't you know you're in Madrid?" and continue to be a complete ass.
26. What was the best book you read?: Probably Pyramids! by Terry Pratchett or re-reading His Dark Materials. I'll go with the Pratchett though, because I hadn't read it before.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?: Eeeerm... I like accordians and bagpipes on trains and in the street. Not both at once though.
28. What did you want and get?: Pshhh, a ridiculous amount of things. A trip to Europe and the UK and Egypt!
29. What did you want and not get?: I'm going to go with last year's comment of Draconic powers, because there isn't really anything... .Oh, there's that Troop London bag. Sigh.
30. What was your favourite film of this year?: Maybe UP!. It's cute but dispoportionately sad. I haven't yet seen Avatar, so this may change.
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?: 22, eep! Gavin and I went for dinner in a pub in Westminster in London (Fish and Chips - sublime!), and then we went to see Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince at the London Imax (biggest screen in the UK!). Also I got an extra hour of birthday because we flew into London from Portugal.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?: Basically nothing!
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008?: Evolving!
34. What kept you sane?: Not really anything; I didn't need to be kept sane this year!
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?: None of them!
36. What political issue stirred you the most?: None really? I have been pretty disconnected from the world this year. I saw Gordon Brown debate in the House of Commons in Westminster, but that doesn't really count, does it? :P
37. Who did you miss?: EVERYONE! And Bonnie.
38. Who was the best new person you met?: Errr, I got along pretty well with Catherine, a Kiwi from our Egypt tour, and Adam, who is a New South Welshman from Egypt also...
Best new Friendship : Above?
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2008: In Egypt, ensure that the bottled water has a plastic seal over the top of the bottle's lid, and NEVER EAT THE PAELLA.
And finally, a pidgeon probably won't get you far, if you're hungry.
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year: Over the hills and far away.... Mother duck said Quack Quack Quack Quack, but only four little ducks came back!
That question is damned hard, ok?
