Not that expensive at all really, definately not as expensive as Paris. It helps because the £ is only doubling the Australian dollar at the moment, but if you eat sensibly - like out of supermarkets (Iceland is great) instead of restaurants, but if you look around pub meals can be quite cheap (I had Fish & Chips for £5). Most publically owned museums are free/dontation, but things that you have to pay for are generally quite expensive (but worth it! Like Buckingham Palace.) The rest of England is cheaper than London so far though..
And if you're staying in London get an Oyster Card, it's like our Smart Rider, and is for the metro system and is cheaper than buying tickets. The metro is fantastic, and so are the busses. Mmm.
So yes... I don't think it's as expensive as everyone says.
If you need a hostel to stay at I recommend the Walrus. It's right on Westminster Bridge road, making it walking distance from everything & a metro, the owner, Dave, is really nice, there's a (basic) breakfast included and the showers are good and clean... So yeah. They're really good.
