I can't believe I'm taking a class that makes bleeding heart liberal communist me look an oppressor. It's an intro to rape--I mean, women and gender studies class, and am I ever ready for it to be over.
Here's an example of my bigotry: I suggested that racism is on the decline because we were able to elect a black president.
Here's an example of my lack of sympathy towards those of us oppressed by patriarchy: I suggested that women should carry their own condoms if they don't want to be in a situation where they're going to have sex and their partner doesn't have one.
Here's an example of my inability to understand rape as a cultural epidemic: I suggested that high rape and sex crime rates might have something to do with the high recidivism rate of sexual predation as a component of the staggering numbers rather than increasing violence towards women and children, white or otherwise, fueling the data entirely.
Here's how I perpetuate marginalization of disabled women: I think it'd ridiculous that my professor doesn't want us to use the word "disabled" because it's too negative. Instead, she thinks "differently abled" is a better term. I understand her intentions, but I think it's a bit of a reach. This, I did not voice.
We haven't received any of our assignments back yet, so I have no idea how well (or unwell) I'm doing in this class. I have lackluster things to contribute because we seem to rehash the same few ideas day in and day out. To top it all off, I am--as usual--the only non-Christian in the room. I'm actually amazed that my professor can be who she is and fit Christianity in there at the same time without being kicked out of any church, however, my thoughts on a lot of what we discuss all go back to religion. Not men, but religious people. Here, specifically Christian people. This is the one point where I'm willing to concede that I'm a bigot, by the way.
Also, I don't think that we need to abolish capitalism in order to find social equilibrium. To be perfectly honest, I don't know that social equilibrium is possible, but, also, I'm apparently a lot more right-leaning than I'd thought because although I think we need heavy regulation, I would choose a heavily regulated capitalist system over a purely socialist one.
