Those of us who love Spike and Xander always root for the happy ending, the stark reality is that probably no matter how much they love each other it won't happen.

Xander has to work, Spike has to stay behind. Unless he is able to completely sudue his vampire nature Spike's going to want to be out and about at night, leaving Xander sleeping. Unless he turns Xander and really what's the point, he loves Xander's humanity; even fed Spike's blood Xander will slowly age and die and Spike will be alone. They have enormous odds against them.

This was sad, but truthful and beautifully written.
