So the thing with Adam is that he isn't really Adam. Adam Carter died in a car bomb explosion, and the character that thinks, or will think eventually when he "regains" some of his memories he is Adam is actually basically a puppet/mask/toy of the real character, the Lone Power. Now, the Lone Power is the Power (beings who put existence into being and coordinates the flow of regular power in the universes) that was made first and Who became jealous of Its siblings and decided to go off and make death and entropy and things like that, and then was cast out for it. And has spent the rest of eternity messing with Life as its greatest enemy. So in the deepest sense, people can't do anything to It. Except if It wants to let Alucard mess with Adam, for kicks. Except if It--since this is of necessity just a fragment or facet of It--gets a little too used to being Adam.
ETA: Oh, and. This hasn't happened to Adam, yet, but I've been toying with the thought, and this seems as good a place to mention it as any. I think Adam could be killed off in-game, and the LP would just bring him back, and he'd just have to deal with it. I think that would be interesting.
