If anyone is as OLD as I AM.

John Hyde has a cool site called Scritti Cola. If there is anyone out there old enough to remember Scritti Politti's music.

Green Gartside studied at Leeds...art school...england. I remember hearing this many moons ago that he studied and actually was a barrister. If this is true I'd really like to know. The music, was wonderful for it's time. the actual lyrics..he was brilliant. he loves to play on words, language, etc. He used to belong to the communist party in the 70's. His influences were the Sex Pistols and the Clash. He was in the Punk scene when it emerged in London. Scritti Politti means Political Writing in Italian, he just changed it slightly....
His music was with Rough Trade records....an indie label. (the strokes I believe is on this label???) Then the punk scene was everywhere and novel. He went into a different direction with his music. I've been a schizo ever since. One of these days, I would like to say to his face how much of an influence he was on me when I was a young kid, and turned me onto music, and had me running to the dictionary to understand his words. I studied constantly in order to understand the lyrics, then next thing you know I was hooked and in love with our language and vocabulary and was my best subject in school in order to write my own. ( too bad I didn't spend that much time on math). Business English, then finally the interest to study law..the statutes and for the fun of it. scary huh? He dispappeared now and then because he was tired of the commercialism of the industry when he truly wanted to make music for the joy of it. A rare quality indeed these days.
I wouldn't have picked up the drums or the synthesizer (eeeew...so ...80's) if it wasn't for this guy. I probably would have been another dead kid in South Phoenix or in prison. The 2nd Bristish invasion was IT for me, and Green Gartside was leading the way.
There are some who will argue why he would go to include rap with his last album. When I stop and think about it it seems to be the natural progression..when rap is the play on words, using language to display history, a book if you will, of a culture. It seems only logical he would include this in his music at one point in time. I am still quite infatiuated with this man. His lyrics still hold me in captivation, and those soulful blue eyes. I can only hope to be lucky enough to meet the man behind the music. His next album will be out in February. The tentative title should be "Early". I can't wait to pick it up, and see what genre he's defying next.
