This topic gets me all riled up. I believe that modern medicine, like all things, is not an all-or-nothing concept. It is not completely perfect and right, nor is it the worst thing in the world and people who take either side upset me. It is beneficial but it has flaws. It is flawed but still beneficial.

People who let their children die rather than taking them to the hospital are committing neglect, in my opinion. Whether because of religious beliefs or because they dose them with homemade herbal remedies.

Medicine is chemistry. The original medicines were plants, for sure, and many of our modern ones are derived from plants. That doesn't mean they're not dangerous. Plants can kill. I'd rather have chemists who know what is in the plants and what is in your body and how those things interact make the medicine and doctors who know how much is right for each body type prescribe them. I'd rather have surgeons stitching me up than my mom.

That being said, I rarely take any medicine because most illnesses aren't life-threatening - my body can take care of itself. There is no cure for the common cold. Doctors prescribing antibiotics for the cold is the opposite end of the spectrum and just as wrong. That's where drug-resistant bacteria come from, which is a huge threat to the effectiveness of modern medicine.

In short, always be critically evaluating medicines and therapies, modern or traditional/alternative. Be an informed consumer and client. Know your rights and have a basic understanding of your body.

Am I just rambling or did this make any sense? Love you Nem.

I completely agree with Aislin here.

Wow, it's been a long time since I last said that.
