Canon Character and Series: Gaignun Kukai Jr. (Real name: Rubedo Yuriev)
In-Game Name: Gaignun Kukai Jr. / Rubedo Yuriev, most often goes by just "Jr."
Age: 28 (appears to be 12 years old)
Gender: Male
Position & Ship (first and second choice for position please):
1st - Gunner, the Silvana
2nd - Quartermaster, the Silvana
Appearance: Despite his age, Jr. appears to be a twelve-year-old boy. His hair is a vibrant shade of pinkish red and his eyes a light shade of powder blue. Even for his "age," Jr. is extremely short, standing at a mere 4'7", short enough that even most girls will tower over him. However, this does not seem to bother him in the least. What Jr. lacks in height, he makes up for in personality.
Jr. is quite fond of cowboy apparel, and his taste in clothing reflect that, most of his outfits seeming to resemble a modernized version of the classic cowboy, complete with holsters to hold guns. While his clothes may change, there is one thing that is always constant: the long, dangling earring on his left ear. Whether or not this accessory has any significance to Jr. or is merely something he likes to wear (or even if there's a matching one for the other ear) is unknown. Also, tattooed in red on Jr.'s right palm, is the number 666, his experiment number.
Personality: Along with looking like a child, Jr. often acts like one. He is rash and sometimes unintentionally rude. He is also easy going, casual, and likes to establish friendly relationships with as many people as he can. That said, as a director in the Kukai Foundation, Jr. also has many qualities of a leader: he is observant, and works well under pressure, able to make difficult, important decisions. He tends to curse when under stress, but except for a few select circumstances, he will always pull through.
Jr. has a few select hobbies he is intensely passionate about. In typical young male fashion, he is absolutely fascinated by guns and not only collects them, but puts them to good use. His love of them is almost fanatical, as the mere sight of a rare or well-made gun is enough to send him into fits of pure fanboyism. He also enjoys classic adventure novels and action radio dramas. While neither of the two are at the level of his extreme love for firearms, he is quite devoted to them.
Abilities/Weapons: Jr. has unique abilities that few, if anyone else, possess. At a young age, Jr. had mana crystals injected into his bloodstream as an experiment by his father, Dr. Dimitri Yuriev, (of whom he is a genetic clone of) as part of an experiment to create a biological weapon. Jr.'s powers include a strange force called Red Dragon, a destructive aura that appears in times of great anger. Jr. is unable to control this power and avoids it as much as possible. Another is the fact that Jr. can slow his body's cells to a near-standstill, which is what has allowed him to retain his youthful appearance. Jr. has done this in order to contain his Red Dragon power. It also renders him immune to virtually every disease and in effect, cannot die of age since his body is essentially "frozen."
Jr. avoids his mana-infused abilities as much as possible and instead turns to gunplay and his knowledge of machinery to win battles. As an offshoot of his obsession with guns, Jr. is an incredible shot with a firearm, so good that he wields them akimbo-style: one in each hand. He also knows how to pilot a fighter plane, but prefers not to except in extreme circumstances. Jr. also uses some magic, although sparringly. His specialty is fire magic, which he sometimes uses in combination with his gunplay or whatever machines he is using.
Weaknesses: Although he is potentially very powerful, Jr. cannot, or at least will not, use the full extent of his abilities. By doing so, Jr. has crippled his combative ability severely. Until he learns to control the Red Dragon, Jr. will not stand out in any group of fighters, other than his exceptional marksmanship. Jr.'s Red Dragon is extremely destructive, and if not contained, will cause massive damage around him, not distinguishing between friend or foe.
Emotionally, Jr. has a few buttons that, if pressed, will send him into a states of rage and depression. One is the subject of Sakura Mizrahi, the other is his twin brother, Albedo.
History: The Yuriev Institute is, publicly, a mental health institution that has received high critical acclaim for its advancements in the study of mental illness, the stellar care of its patients, and its research on the human brain. Founded fifty years ago by Dimitri Yuriev, the leading expert on brain research, it stands about two hours west of Berum (assuming one is traveling by carriage, of course) and boasts only the most sophisticated magitech, funded heavily by the Vohemaro government and private donors.
What the general public does not know, however, is that for a while, the Yuriev Institute also conducted horrible experiments. Along with his research in the human brain, Dimitri Yuriev was also an expert on genetics. Approaching the Vohemaro government, he claimed that he could create an army of genetically modified soldiers - with the correct funding of course. Seizing all the funding he could ever hope for, Yuriev got to work. Using a combination of magic, magictech, and his own DNA, Yuriev attempted to mass clone himself. The plan was to create as many clones as possible and inject liquefied mana crystals into their bodies. Dimitri Yuriev once injected mana crystals into his own blood stream, which allowed him to greatly increase his life span. His real age compared to his public one, is quite different. However, this is a closely guarded secret: not even the Vohemaro government or even his most trusted subordinates knew his secret.
Many of the infants died within a few days. Those that did survive were injected with liquefied mana crystals, which killed a great many more. The ones that did survive the process were subjected to tests, to monitor their abilities and attempt to train them once they got older. Some of the children died from the experiments. Others were deemed failures and suffered a variety of fates: some were abandoned in the wild to fall prey to monsters, and others were just outright "disposed" of. Many of the children even committed suicide.
The number of "failures" had reached six hundred and sixty five, and Dimitri Yuriev had not yet given up hope. If anything he was more determined than ever this time, obsessed with making a perfect soldier. Each of the clones had a different mixture of mana crystals injected into him, and Dimitri still had a few more combination to try. He attempted to create two more clones, but something strange happened and he ended up with three: the first of the clones developed into twins conjoined at the heart. Yuriev, driven nearly insane by his desire to create a perfect human weapon, took this as a sign. These three would be "the ones." After careful surgery to separate the conjoined twins, he injected all three of them with mana crystals, and something completely new happened: the oldest clone, one of the conjoined twins, had his hair change to a deep red and his eyes blue, his twin white with purple eyes, and the third clone black with green eyes. Yuriev did something he did not do with his previous experiments: he gave them names instead of just numbers. They became Rubedo, Albedo, and Nigredo respectively.
The three brothers were all overwhelming successes. They all excelled at the testing and each seemed to have their own unique strengths. Rubedo seemed the most promising. He had a bold, outgoing personality, and had shown in testing to slow his body's cells down to a practical standstill and that he contain tremendous destructive force. Albedo looked good as well: he had a unique ability to heal any injury, even grow back lost limbs by stimulating his cells to grow back at a rapid pace. However, Albedo has shown to be mentally unstable at times. Nigredo seemed to pale in comparison, and while he never showed off his powers, (they include telepathy to his brothers and the ability to hypnotically manipulate people using his voice) papers from the Yuriev Institute heavily imply that he is the perfect opposition to Rubedo, and could kill him easily by countering all of his powers. Thus, Nigredo was given the task of killing Rubedo should he ever get out of control.
Growing up together in the Yuriev Institute, Rubedo met one of the patients, a young girl around his age named Sakura Mizrahi. While she was unresponsive to most people, she grew fond of Rubedo and he to her. Given time, their relationship could have easily blossomed into romance. However, one night, Rubedo found Sakura dead, in the arms of his twin brother Albedo. Albedo claimed to have killed Sakura and Rubedo flew into a rage, almost releasing his raw destructive power. Whether or not Albedo killed Sakura is unconfirmed: Sakura Mizrahi's records seem to have mysteriously disappeared from the Yuriev Institute's files. However, Rubedo does believe that Albedo was Sakura's murder. Albedo told Rubedo that the three of them were destined for better things. Overcome with anger and grief, Rubedo swore off any relation to his twin.
The time finally came to test the boys in battle. At age twelve, the three of them were brought to the Badlands and dropped in a monster infested area. Things went horribly, the boys failed in a real life battle. Albedo was separated from his brothers and assumed dead. Nigredo was badly injured. Rubedo had difficulty controlling his power, and Yuriev had enough. He approached Nigredo and ordered him to kill Rubedo. Nigredo refused and instead, killed Dimitri Yuriev. His own "father." The two surviving boys then were picked up by the Vohemar government and were offered normal lives in exchange for their silence on Yuriev's research. They gladly accepted. They both wanted to put this behind them.
Sixteen years later, a new business group began to take all of Vohemar by storm: the Kukai Foundation. Run by Gaignun Kukai, a regal-looking man in his late twenties with jet black hair and deep green eyes, the Kukai Foundation is all about making life better for the common man by developing products and investing in small businesses. The foundation is so successful that it has a voice in the government, although it is still small at the moment. The Kukai family is known to be extremely wealthy, but also a dying clan: Gaignun Kukai is supposedly the last in their bloodline. In reality, they are fictional, an elaborate hoax created by the government at Kukai's request. Kukai's only known living family is his adopted son: Gaignun Kukai Jr., a young boy with vibrant red hair and powder blue eyes. As young as he is, Jr. is already a top ranking executive in the company, but he did not get the position by nepotism: he shows great leadership, maturity, and rationality. It is often hard to believe the boy is only twelve.
Kukai and his son are, in reality, the two surviving clones of Dimitri Yuriev. One of Rubedo's abilities is to slow his body's development to a standstill, which he has done to both masquerade as his younger brother's son and to contain his powers, which he still lacks control over.
Recently, rumors of letters have been sent to Gaignun Kukai threatening to kill his son and heir, so Jr. has supposedly been sent to the Silvana until the culprits are caught. While the foundation can easily pay for Jr.'s passage, Jr. instead opted to work as a member of the crew, as he bores easily. In reality, Rubedo and Nigredo have their suspicions that their brother Albedo is alive, and they are searching for him.
There are also rumors that before Yuriev's death, he secretly made one last clone. The Kukais are now investigating whether or not this is true.
