This ... I have no words. What a horrible thing to experience in class! School shouldn't be the place of ignorance, quite the opposite, really. What a despicable man.
For years now I have been highly amused (not in the good sense though) whenever I read or listen to the American government boast about "protecting human rights" like they supposedly did in some places all over the world. Why? Because my deep belief is that one should always straight out matters in one's own land/nation before even daring to meddle on other people's affairs. Where are the rights of the Native Americans in the USA? Why aren't they protected and supported and treated right if the US nation is so big on human rights?
Simple questions, actually, but I fear no one will answer for them because the few remaining Native Americans seem to constantly remind people that they live and build their fortunes on stolen land and on wiped out lives. And who wants such constant reminders? Nah, then it's much better to ridicule, to degrade, to demoralize the Native Americans and make their lives living hell in the hope that they will miraculously disappear one day and one can finally live freely and with a peaceful mind in the Land of the Free. (my very personal and possibly very bitter interpretation)
Germany, mainly due to the writer Karl May and the Winnetou movie series, is somewhat smitten with Native Americans. Also, many people from the alternative scene are drawn towards Native American culture because they are interested in the concept of living in harmony with nature. I fear though, that views are pretty romanticized and very few look deeper. Aside from borrowing knowledge and imitating a unique way of life nothing is done to support Native Americans or fight for their rights.
What irks me most is that our government is a toothless puppy without any balls or they would quit dealings with the USA and put them under an embargo until Native Americans receive rights and are compensated for the wrongs they had to endure in the past. That's hardly fair nor right. My personal impression is that the USA as a nation keeps the fate of Native Americans completely under wraps. And the rest of world seems quite fine with it. Otherwise they would have to acknowledge some uncomfortable truths about the grand nation.
It's a disgrace and I am shamed of my government.
But then again - what true power governments have today? Just yesterday an Ukraine female minister was sentenced to 7 years prison and all Europe does is voice their "discontent and disappointment". Hurra for democracy!
I am sorry for ranting. But then again I am pretty disillusioned by human kind.
What you had to experience in class is terrible and I am sorry that you did. I hope that you will be able to confront that teacher with a clear mind and non-refutable facts and arguments - don't let him get away with his bullshit!
And yeah, just like the commentator above said - Maybe his lecture can be filed against him. Too bad you didn't record it for evidence.
