88 Minutes came from Netflix this week, and I got a chance to sit down with my parents the other night and watch it. For anyone out there thinking they should do the same, DON'T! Ok...I'm usually pretty lenient when it comes to movies. I always try to find something positive about them, because I hate thinking of putting down all the work that went it to making the film. But not here. Not for this movie.
The movie was just over and hour and a half long, and I can't even remember the main character's name. I actually can't remember ANY of the characters' names. And even though the movie was about 90 minutes long, it felt as though everything that happened took place in the span of about 30 minutes because of how erratic the storyline was. Al Pacino, who is usually awesome, came off as somewhat delusional and schizophrenic. And those were his most notable traits. I have no idea who the character was or anything important about him, other than the fact that he's some sort of behavioral analyst who teaches a college class and that "88 minutes" is a horrifying memory from his past.
All the characters that he interacts with throughout the movie are just as disjointed as the main character. Like I said before, I can't even remember any of their names. And this is not because I wasn't paying attention, this is because they were so chaoticly introduced. And from a story standpoint, they had absolutely no perceived relevance until the last 5 minutes of the movie. The only reason you knew any of these characters were 'supporting' was due to the overly long camera shots of them during the first 30 minutes. To top it all off, what you could decipher about the characters was beyond cliche and predictable. I could not help but feel sorry for all the actors in this movie. They had nothing to aspire to with these poorly written characters, and therefore appeared as though they simply didn't know how to act.
Then there was the story itself. Nothing was properly explained and there was no flow to the plot points. All of the characters' moves seemed to come from nowhere (which partly stemmed from the fact that you don't know the characters) and they were completely uninteresting. The random and unneccesary flashbacks of the main character did nothing for the story itself because the significance of "88 minutes" to him, I'm sorry to tell you, had absolutely no relevance at all to the current "You have 88 minutes to live" plot. The ridiculous storyline never even had a chance at attempting to misdirect my guess at the ending (which turned out to be correct, by the way).
In summation....I highly do NOT recommend this movie, haha.
On a lighter note, I finally have a few video ideas :) It would appear that mine and
tugger29 's muse has wandered back over to my house for a visit. But we'll see how long it stays. Everyone knows it has WAY more fun at her house, haha. However, working some more on the ideas will have to wait until tomorrow because I'm sick and tired and I should get some sleep.
