She couldn't believe this was happening.

He'd always said they were a romantic comedy. Romantic comedies didn't end this way. They never ended with the love interest running off with another girl, leaving the heroine alone.

Unless she wasn't the heroine.

Haruhi's grip on the reins faltered. She had to be the heroine, right? That's why they all cared so much. That's why, well, why they did everything.

This wasn't the way romantic comedies ended.

He wasn't supposed to run off with another girl. He was supposed to rise against all odds, and fight to be with her.

But he had given up. He'd given up on her for something else. She didn't know what it was, and she probably never would.

Chasing after him was a waste of time. He'd chosen to leave, she should just let him go.

Right as she was about to give up, a flash of red caught her eye, spurring her onward.

The plot to a romantic comedy is predictable. Boy and girl meet, they like each other, but something gets in the way. Once all seems lost, a surprise twist provides a way for the boy and girl to be together.

Haruhi was too caught up in the moment, but in retrospect, she'd realize that their story was playing out exactly as it should.
