[When the journal starts recording, there is - at first - no unusual noise. After a few moments, though, comes a groan, the voice definitely female and probably young...ish. A couple of muttered words, too low or too far away to be distinguishable, then-]

[There may have been stranger things in town, but that doesn't make it any less intimidating when a bear walks about. The only thing keeping her from drawing one of her knives is that fact that it's carrying a journal and has wings. Her body language still errs on cautious as she comes closer.]

[And Rachel's seen enough combat in the past three years to know the tense stance that precedes it - and she's pretty sure why this girl hasn't attacked yet.]

< I'm not gonna chase you and I don't want to eat you, you don't have to freak out. >

[Why yes that thought is in your head. And, if the fact that the bear is turning its head towards Tear is an indication, it's coming from the big furry animal in front of her.]

[... It spoke. In her head. The melodist tries to relax, but it's a little hard when you encounter an animal that seems abnormal from the others here.]

[That would be because "abnormal" is about the most mild way of putting it.]

< Yeah, but I'm not really new, I've been here before. Not sure how long it's been since that, but I don't need the lecture. >

You were here before? [She wouldn't be the best to give the lecture anyway, having arrived only last cycle.] Will you be needing any assistance, then...?

[Well this'll probably be a long conversation, so she decides to do something totally unbearlike to prove she isn't a dangerous carnivore. ...Okay a dangerous non-sentient carnivore. The bear sets the journal down on the edge of the fountain, then sits its butt down with its paws braced on the ground between its legs like a kid in preschool.]

< Maybe, yeah - you got any idea what's been going on here lately? >

[So very non-specific, but she wants to try and catch up.]

From what I've gathered since I arrived, the Malnosso drafted a number of the villagers to participate in a joint rescue operation against the Third Party. While it was a success, we now have an ocean where the desert once was.

[And she's staring while saying this, because that's still unusual.]

[And if a polar bear could double-take, Rachel would totally be doing so. California girl wants her water.]

< We've got an ocean now?! Is there a beach too? >

Y-yes. Though I'm not sure if there's a beach, I have yet to go there myself. [She seemed excited enough.]

[blondexena]

[That's 'cause a beach is fantastic. Rachel lumbers her bear body up into a standing position and shakes herself down; she's not cold, but she knows Tear probably is.]

< Definitely gonna have to check that out then. And aren't you freezing? >

It's bearable. [Get it? Bear? *shot* She gives Luke a hard time about keeping his coat buttoned, yet here she only has a thin sweater.]

< You must be from a different part of the world than I'm from. Or a different world altogether. >

[And the bear reaches out to pick up the journal once again between her teeth, being careful not to break it.]

< Oh yeah - I'm Rachel. Rachel Berenson. >

A pleasure to meet you Rachel. I'm Tear. [She almost stooped down to help her pick up the journal until she saw she could do it on her own. Definitely not a normal bear.]

Would you like any more assistance?

[Nope, very much not a normal bear, though at the moment she is constrained by the bear's limited physical motions and no opposable thumbs.]

< Nah, I think I'm good. I'm gonna need to find some place to crash, though, doubt my old place is still free. There's free apartments here still, right? >

Apartments are still free. Where were you staying before?

< Building five. I'll probably go over and see if stuff's still open there, at least I'm familiar with it. Looks like the buildings got a couple extra stories since then, though. >
