Sickie

That's what they call me. I totally got sick on my trip home a couple weekends back. I've been fighting the good fight since then, but I am not sure when it's just going to transition into allergy season...

I didn't do much last week. I actually didn't do anything for St. Patrick's Day, I wanted a good night of sleep and recovery. I decided to go to New York Thursday even though I was feeling a little deathly. I managed to get on the 10 am bus, the bus ride was actually pretty packed in the morning. I think there was one free seat. I played a lot of The World Ends With You, and did some reading of American Gods. Frankly, it was good to get in the reading time. For some reason, I brought this book with me on the plane to and from California, but didn't get around to breaking it out. I mean, I did watch "Up In The Air" on the way there, but I don't think I did much else. Anyway, I am about 3/4 through at this point, and I am liking it so far...

Miranda and I wandered up to Central Park that afternoon, after stopping by the Pickle Guys shop right near our Subway stop. We got some plain sours to snack on, and peppers and green beans for later. (Let me tell you now, they were delicious, in particular the green beans which were surprisingly crunchy!) It was a beautiful day, sunny and almost 70 degrees. The park was totally overrun with people enjoying the weather. Central Park is huge, and I often run into something I've never seen before while I am there. This time it was the Alice in Wonderland statue, a huge bronze affair with all the major characters. I have pictures, I'll put them up later. We got to Miranda's house around 5:30ish, and hung out with Andrea and RSR. For dinner we walked down to Rice Thai. I love eating in New York, it's just awesome. The spring rolls were good, and I had this amazing "special tofu" dish, I think it was some kind of seitan, in a sort of sweet and tangy sauce with onions and bell peppers and fresh basil. I just ate all that up. In the evening, we baked molten lava chocolates and had berries with whiskey chocolate dip.

On Friday, Miranda and I made our way to the American Museum of Natural History. We had breakfast (I ate the leftover strawberries and raspberries), but we still needed a little more sustenance before an all day in the museum, so I had a pretzel, and M had a knish. I do love a good street pretzel. At the museum we saw: the butterfly garden, Lizards and Snakes Alive, Traveling the Silk Road, the planetarium show, and the IMAX of "Mysteries of the Great Lakes". That's the order in which we saw them, and almost the order I'd rank them. The butterflies are easy and fun to see, the lizards were a little on the dull side, but at least there were real animals, the Silk Road... I don't know, it didn't do it for me. It was an alright exhibit, but it could have used more artifacts, really. I would have liked to have seen more silk! The live silkworms were pretty neat. The thing about the planetarium, they only have one show, and I have seen it about 5 times at this point. It's at other planetariums, too. They only offer one IMAX at a time, too. This one about the Great Lakes, it's really amazingly dull for an IMAX! I mean, the central focus is sturgeons. Some of the cool things we poked into were neat, too. Like the spider silk cloth. I wish I could touch it, just to know what it feels like. The minerals are always pretty cool too. There are some new diamonds on display, and that's always neat.

That evening we snacked on cheeses and pickles, which was awesome, before the party. M was throwing a "Pornim" party. It was pretty hilarious. Everyone dressed up all silly. We ate a lot of food. RSR and I got some Thai from Lemongrass Thai, the other place near their house in Brooklyn. Also delicious, and huge servings of the noodle dish. We also ordered lots of pizza! There was much drunkenness, not so much from me since I was still feeling a little dead. dopplex and I played some TWEWY, it's critical for pins! Yes, we are nerds. mzsylver decided it would be easier to just crash with us for the evening.

Saturday morning, M, Andrea, RSR, Mike (the last of the sleepers) and I went to Dizzy's for brunch. I started feeling more like death there... I think allergy season has started in New York, while it hasn't started here yet. But I did have a delicious buckwheat and pecan waffle, with berries. We lucked out getting there in time to get a table without waiting forever! On the bus home I pretty much did more of the same...
