it's heeeeeeeeeeeere!
and my beloved nationalelf are prepared to dazzle tomorrow.
i love this. for one month every four years, the world goes nuts. it's the only time that one third of the global population does anything in unison, watching this. i saw bits of the Mexico/South Africa game while at work yesterday, including that lovely first goal. i watched the tail-end of the France/ Uruguay match when i got home. i love seeing all the flags on cars (we've got one on the Beetle - ultimate nerd) and the jerseys on people. i love living in Canada for this because you can support any country you choose, and no matter what happens - someone is always celebrating a game. the only Canadian on the pitch this year is one of the referees, but that's fine by us. (we donated most of the grass too, haha) my dad has organised a big betting pool at his work again, so he's more invested than usual. Omi is visiting this weekend, and she's just as into it as we are. in the first day of play, CBC.ca said they'd had more hits on their streaming site than they ever did for a day during the Olympics. don't get me wrong - watching Canada in hockey the Vancouver Olympics was amazing, but still nothing compares to the excitement (for me anyway) of watching the World Cup. and clearly, a lot of others believe this as well. (CBC.ca also asked viewers where they were watching from, and 53% said "work"!) companies have actually accounted for a loss of productivity for this month. it's all well and good if you're in Europe, but we're six hours behind South Africa, so the games occur right in the middle of the work-day. around this time of year lots of people call in sick or suddenly have to take care of aunts or need to pick kids up from school early, etc. it's hilarious but unavoidable. Danilo had "Српски 2010" shaved into the back of his head. he and i have made a pact - to maintain the happiness at convocation (the day after the Serbia/Germany game) that we are limited to three snide remarks each! frankly, i'll be more afraid of having his dad and my dad sit near each other, haha.
this kind of excitement... it just makes a summer. it's a shame that i won't be in Canada for the finals, because - although England will surely be fun too, i know it will feel different. i don't believe England will make it all the way, so the country will be gripped by a certain kind of depression/disappointment, and it'll be tough to rile up appreciation for any other teams. (especially, haha, if Germany should make it.) i watched the entire Argentina/Nigeria game today, and was in total awe of the Nigerian goalkeeper. if you ask me, i kind of have a fear that Argentina will win the Cup this year, even though i really (REALLY) don't want them to. but that goalie, he kept up. sadly, my boyfriend is not such a fan of the footie, so i'll struggle to find some people i can watch matches with once i'm in York. and oh, haha, god forbid i find some Germans!
i don't know where i'm going with this, suffice to say that i'm very happy it's FIFA time again. nothing beats it.
