"So, what kind of 'upgrade' do you think Barbara's got planned for my costume?" Dinah asked, swinging her legs off the edge of one cantilevered beam, and grinning at her partner. "It can't be fishnets, that's all I'm saying."

Some time after Dinah and Helena were done being hot with their adventure, Dinah's phone beeped to let her know she had a text.

Call me when free. U won't be happy.

After various punchings and hittings and other things to be played out, Dinah checked her messages, and frowned and punched in Karla's number.

"Hey, it's me. What's up?"

"So, I got a letter from home yesterday," Karla said quietly. The good mood she'd gotten while plotting with Ino had eroded over the rest of the day. "Not good news."

"Oh, crap." Dinah sucked in a Breath as they got on the monorail for home. "What's happening? Is Jaenelle okay? Anyone hurt?"

"According to my uncle," Karla said, trying to sound nonchalant, "I'm dead."

Dinah's breath hissed through her teeth. "Oh, that low-down, no-good... creepy smart bastard. What's he saying happened to you, that you just got sick and died at school?"

"He is not supposed to be that smart!" Karla flared. "He's not! I know this male and he's nowhere near this bright!"

That part was really bothering her.

"He doesn't know I'm at school. I just...vanished. Which kind of adds credence to the announcement."

"You couldn't be lucky enough for him to stay stupid forever," Dinah said grimly. "Not when so many other people can benefit from him being stupid and in power." She sighed. "Oh, crap. So unless you show up..."

"I'm not going to show up," Karla said in a tiny voice. "It's almost certainly a trap and if I go charging in to prove him wrong--" her first instinct, to be sure "--I won't be coming out again. If he's declared me dead...it means he no longer has reason or incentive to keep me alive."

Dinah closed her eyes, wincing. "I'm so, so glad you realized the first part. And-- I'm so sorry about the second part." Her voice gentled. "This is not your fault. Whatever reason he's got to move now, it's not down to you."

"It was tough," Karla admitted. "Coming to that conclusion. Especially since I know what effect this will have on Glacia. There are people depending on me...and they're going to think I am dead."

She drew in a long, shaky sigh. "Morton's doing...something. Putting something together, some kind of meeting I think. I'm going home for that. Ben's already informed me that he's coming with me, so it'll be the three of us, at least."

"Do you need me to come with you too?" Dinah offered. "'Cause I can get on Portalocity, and get a ticket in no time. Not that Ben won't look out for you, but..." She worried, okay?

Karla wanted to say yes, she really did..."I don't even know when we'll be called away," she said, regretfully. "You might come here and sit around waiting for a summons that arrives halfway through next week. You can't afford to take that time away from school."

"Nnnngh. This blows." Dinah sighed gustily, and then spun around a streetlight to work off the energy. "Okay. You call before you leave? Yes? And you'll check in from Glacia? Promise? I want to know you're safe while you're there."

"You just want me to prove I can make cellphones work in Kaeleer so you can call Lucivar," Karla said with some half-hearted cheer.

"Every silver lining has a really big storm cloud," Dinah told her. "I could go without calling Lucivar if I know you're safe... Although I will tell him you gave me my own honey-pear tree, nyaaah, if I get through to him."
